Buz Sawyer Book 4: Zazarof's Revenge (ROY CRANE BUZ SAWYER HC)

Educative, Fun, Realistic
All the four books are excellent. The binding is of good quality. The shape is awkward. All the books are provided with write-ups that provide much insight into the persons behind the strip, global and domestic political situations, and social conventions prevalent in those times. These stories also provide a realistic glimpse into military life, however, it avoids the more realistic grimness of the novel “All Quiet on the Western Front.”They bestow a sense of completeness to Buz Sawyer’s life. These books, however, do not include the courtship and marriage of Rosco Sweeny. The stories are mostly in black-and-white, with a very few exceptional pages that are not part of the main storyline.Highly recommended.

Another Excellent Volume of Buz Sawyer At Last
Buz Sawyer is perhaps the best American Adventure Comic Strip that no one (besides a select few) has ever heard of. The first three volumes appeared over a two and a half year period beginning in 2011. Now it has been two and a half years since Volume #3 and I suspect this might be it for the series. Unless sales on this book increase. Fantagraphics publishes two Prince Valiant books a year on a regular basis so I know they could do it.This is a chronological reprinting of every daily newspaper strip from it's beginnings in 1943. This volume features strips starting with July 11th 1949 and concludes with a story ending June 14th 1952. For whatever reason the strips dates are not mentioned on the cover and the interior contents only tells us in the margin when a new year starts. It does contain over 900 strips reproduced on a three to a page format. Just under three years of great reading. The Sunday Strip was a separate continuity and focused on Sawyer's Navy Buddy Roscoe Sweeney. It was a more Gag type humor strip with very little continuity compared to the tight continuity of Buz Sawyer. The book is almost square size, which is an odd shape for a comic strip collection. Most daily strips are printed in that Landscape format used so well by The American Library Of Comic Strips on the majority of their books. While the printing is sharp and totally readable, I would have preferred them slightly large since the art is so beautiful. You get 306 pages of strips plus an introduction and three letters of congratulations from Buz Sawyer fans Walt Disney, J Edgar Hoover and Richard Nixon. The introduction is is from a talk given by creator Roy Crane in 1961. You also get eight pages of travel sketches in the back of the volume by Crane.Buz Sawyer started in 1943 in World War 2 as such Buz (despite a fear of heights) was a Navy Pilot. After the war ended he became a globe hopping trouble shooter for Frontier Oil. As this volume starts Buz has married Christy and they are returning from their Honeymoon in Africa. The book is a pretty good mix of high adventure intrigue and Suburban Family humor. This volume collects 10 complete storylines. Six of these are longer globe hopping adventure continuities, while four are shorter domestic comedies. Christy Sawyer is featured to some extent in all the stories even when she doesn't accompany Buz on the trip. This book gets my Highest Recommendation. Please support this book and maybe we will get more.

Buz Sawyer Vol 4
