Q: How do you know which wheel sensor is out or needs replacing?

You need a scan tool that reads abs. I don't think the local parts stores will read abs but they do sell the scan tool. You can also get one on Amazon such as this https://www.amazon.com/Innova-3020d-Severity-Emissions-Diagnostics/dp/B07BM9YQBB/ref=sr_1_7?crid=22WBXADLTTTFO&keywords=abs+scan+tool&qid=1555689362&s=gateway&sprefix=Abs+scan+t%2Caps%2C214&sr=8-7 I don't have that model but it should read the abs codes for you.

A little vague with the question. There are 2 of these sensors located in the right and left axle tubes near the outboard ends. They face toward the rear of the vehicle.

According to the fitment guide on the top of the page this part will fit your GMC. It is not necessary to clear codes after the repair but it will take several drive cycles without a failure for the system to reset. The best thing to do would be clear the diagnostic trouble codes and see if everything is operating ok. As long as the abs lamp is on you will not have abs braking available.
