Hornby have put a lot of thought into this set but it could have been even better. For the Amazon discounted price I still think it is good value.“Flash” is quite solid and has some moulded detail. The track is robust and easy to connect together. Invest in a few rechargeable AA batteries - 4 needed for the loco. The remote control works well and gives the youngsters something to do rather than just watch the train going round and round. I have 2 disappointments:1. Flash runs too fast. There are 3 speeds: medium, fast and a bit faster. If you want to stop at the supplied station, or reverse into a siding (with extra track pack) it is all a bit frantic.2. The sounds are too quiet. I have set up the track on a couple of picnic tables so they probably amplify the running noise. Edit: this turns out to be the case. We get better results with the track-mat on the floor/carpet.I do wish they had started with a freight set. There is a lot more play value if you can load and unload wagons. We bought the open wagons and they are worth adding on.

This is a great gift but child needs to be into trains as it can be difficult to keep train on track until they get to grips with it

The media could not be loaded. My 7 year old son absolutely loves it! Fantastic Christmas gift. Easy to put tracks together unlike other tracks we've had to assemble in the past. Train runs smoothly on the track with easy to control remote with great sound and light effects.

The quality of the train seems pretty good and the controls are great. The track is easy to fit together.Downsides: the mat supplied is made of plastic and literally a sheet of ice! Quite dangerous so I got rid of it. The cardboard station and tunnel as you can imagine didn't last two minutes with a 4 year old. Also the train is very difficult to line the wheels up for the track. My son who is 4 and my daughter who is 7 are constantly shouting down the stairs at me to sort it out. Pretty annoying that you can't just leave them to it. Probably better off with Thomas Trackmaster.

Good quality, value for money - recommended

The remote control is simple to use and my 4 year old finds it easy. The only negative is that it isn't easy to get the train to sit on the tracks correctly. Both adults struggled a little....once on however it stays on and is easy.
