Biochar: Production, Characterization, and Applications
J**N
Great summary of current biochar research
Written primarily by and for researchers, this book is still accessible for others. Biochar has some very hopeful promises of reducing GHG emissions AND sequestering carbon. But as this book clearly points out, there are a number of puzzles that need to be solved such as:- greatest sequestration benefits come from woody feedstock--not the usual crop residues. Transport increases costs and safety concerns.- benefits in rice paddies are exciting, showing soil enhancement and lower GHG reductions--but biochar renders pesticides useless for a long timeThe authors succinctly summarize the state of knowledge as of 2016 about biochar. There's one exception: there's no data about the economics. This is key, since we're in a race to keep the planet cool, and the window is rapidly closing. It would be helpful to address what the price on carbon would need to be to allow biochar to be widely produced and applied.
