I am pleased - It works as advertised
I purchased a Breville Barista Express with the built in grinder. The grinder does a lousy job grinding for espresso. More specifically the grinder in never consistent. Same bean, same settings, nothing touched, and yet a different consistency of grind each and every time. It was impossible to dial it in. I was ready to send back the whole Breville unit. I did my research and found out other folks who have bought this machine also have this problem. One gets what one pays for obviously. I noticed in many of the videos that I watched all used the same Breville unit and a stand alone grinder. I thought why not try that approach first before returning the whole espresso machine and starting from scratch. I agree with the results that I found. The Baratza Sette 270 is the least expensive yet great quality grinder for grinding espresso perfectly and consistently from grind to grind. It is able to extract / grind the finer flavors from the beans that lessor grinders can only dream about. Yes, I am very happy with my purchase and consistency of this grinder. One issue. The grinder did not work when I first received it. After going through the trouble shooting steps as outlined on the website I found that a wire came unhooked during the assembly of the grinder at the factory. It must have come lose during transit from the factory. It was an easy fix. Take off about 6 screws, pull the case, notice the wire off of the safety switch, reattach and tighten the wire then re-attach the case and screw in the 6 screws. Done, test and working just fine. Because I knew I would only use this machine to grind for espresso I did add the 2nd (included) shim to the base of the conical grinder. I read many users recommend to do this, so I didn't wait and just did it from the beginning. One last thing, SUCCESS, now that I am dialed in I am able to pull the following shot pretty consistently "the first time" and the taste is really smooth. 17.5gm beans, medium roast, 194F degrees brew, 4 second pre infusion, 27 second water flow, 35gm of brewed espresso. For me it's hitting the espresso jackpot. What about you?

Worth the money!
After watching many different reviews and how to videoโs I chose this grinder as my home coffee bar addition. To be fair, I watched a lot of videoโs from Whole Latte Love on YouTube on the whyโs to buy this unit. Buying a good grinder is absolutely key to making espresso at home. Consistency is vital. The reviews and awards that this grinder has received played a big part in my decision to go with this one. I already have an Acaia Lunar scale so going with the Sette 270wi was not as important. The Sette 270Wi has the scale built in and while the cost is huge, the applicationโs it provides are huge! Believe me I wanted the 270Wi bad. I chose the Sette 270. With this grinder it has 3 pre-set grind settingโs you can store. And accurate dosing adjustments are very very easy to do. This machine has the same burr assembly that the 270Wi has. So it does the same job. Accuracy is not quite as good with the 270, butโฆ the dosing differenceโs are very minimal if not non-existent. A lot depends on your beans etc. so I would say the dosing is extremely accurate but not always perfect. This machine is beautiful. Clean in design itโs a nice addition. It holds a lot of beans and the 58mm portafilter fits nicely in the dose holder. If I had any conโs to reportโฆ I would say it is loud. No sneaking in early in the morning for your quiet cup of espresso before the kids get up. In my case the dogs. Lol! This is NOT a cheap machine and as costโs can sky rocket with high end grinders for espresso, this machine not only hits a nice price point but is an award winner to boot! A side note: This is not your store bought grinder. There is a lot of scaling/weighting that goes into making a 18gram double shot of espresso perfect with grind time. Also (very important) the shims that come with the machine are very vital to tuning your machine for espresso. Donโt throw them away. I installed a shim after dialing in 8 shots of coffee. The shim is vital and there for a reason. Baratza has videos on how to install. Very very easy! All in all we are very happy with our purchase. Thank you Amazon!

Excellent Espresso Grinder
The Sette 270 is a great, precision espresso grinder. It can grind somewhat coarse, but not coarse enough for a french press; maybe coarse enough for Chemex. As far as grinding for espresso, it is very fast, grinding 18g in about 6 seconds. This version does not have the weight capability, so I weigh the beans beforehand. I pour the pre-measured beans in, and hit the preset button that grinds for 10 seconds. That pretty well makes sure everything is ground fully. There are many adjustments to dial in your grind perfectly. The grind quality is the best, of the consumer grinders I've tried. I live in a dry climate that is prone to static and clumps in grinds. This is the first grinder I've owned that doesn't introduce clumps. I don't do anything to prepare the beans, don't add moisture, or anything else. When the coffee is ground, there are simply no clumps. I don't know how they do it, but it's amazing. Taking the burr out is relatively easy. You just have to be careful that you screw it back on the proper way (refer to the manual). If you screw it on incorrectly, you can damage the spring inside that tells the grinder that the burr is installed. Then the grinder won't turn on. Beyond that, I expect this grinder to work well for many years.

Nice but Noisy
I love this coffee grinder but it is pretty noisy. It looks great, there are three programmable grind times, the controls are simple to use. Some of the coffee grounds get onto the counter but you can avoid that by lifting the portafilter closer to the grinder. Don't lift it too far or you'll clog the burrs. The bean hoppers can be switched out so you can select different coffees. But thereโs a hitch. Removing a hopper leaves about a half dose in the grinder. Not sure what to do about that. Storing the extra bean hoppers is a bit of a problem. They sit straight on the counter but they are easily knocked over. I might build a rack to hold them. The grind settings are almost infinite. And the price is right in my opinion. If you want a quieter grinder, you're going to pay a lot more.

Great espresso grinder. Easy to repair.
My old Starbucks Barista grinder finally died, so I did my research and settled on the Baratza Sette 270. The results were excellent. Very fast, no waste and a very fine espresso grind. And so I enjoyed great shots every day for a year and a half (made with my Rancilio Silvia, which I love). And then I did something foolish. Someone gifted me a package of Jamaican Blue Mountain ground coffee, which of course I had to try but the grind was not fine enough for espresso. I decided to regrind it using my Sette 270. It worked the motor so hard, I could hear it straining to fine grind already ground coffee. It did the job but at the end I killed the motor. I wrote Batatza and told them the motor was dead. They asked for proof of purchase and then verified that since it had been more than a year since I purchased it, it was no longer under warranty. They did offer to fix it for free if I shipped it back to them and paid for shipping both ways. Unfortunately (fortunately?) I live in the Bahamas and the cost of shipping back and forth to the USA is very expensive. I estimated it would have cost me $300 (almost the price of a new machine). So being handy with electrical repairs, I asked them to just ship me the new motor and I would do the repair. The motor arrived a few days later (they even paid the shipping) and after watching the video they sent, it literally took me 15 minutes to take out the old motor and install the new one. My Batatza is up and running and once again I'm able to make great coffee. The Blue Mountain coffee was excellent but definitely not worth burning a motor over. Lesson here is not to regrind already ground coffee. The Baratza Sette 270 is a great machine that consistently produces a very fine grind. Baratza is an excellent company, that will go the extra mile for their customers. Their customer service is exceptional. Highly recommended machine and company.

The Negatives: 1) The inner burr is not cleaned well out of the factory. There were considerable shards of metal bits that needed to be scraped off with a brush. Note, it is highly unlikely to make it into your coffee since most methods of making coffee would filter these out. However given the supposed quality of this product, I would expect a bit more effort. (-1, not cool) 2) The inner burr does not sit in place consistently after removals when cleaning. Whenever the inner burr is removed, the coarseness setting always needs to be changed to something slightly different. Making it an annoyance to clean and write down grind settings. 3) The manual implies that out of the box the grinder should allow for a nice range of grind settings, as one would expect. However on the smaller end, for espresso grinds, it never reached a size that would allow use with a Capresso EC Pro's bottomless porta-filter. I had to make use of the shims it came with to get it down to a grind size that finally worked. 4) Very Loud Update: After some use it seems there are nooks and crannies where the coffee gets stuck and is very difficult to remove, so if your burr head doesn't adjust all the way to the left, thats the cause. Just use a toothpick to clean it. As most people mention the head is very inconsistent when you turn up the grind size. Otherwise, not too bad for the price. There are definitely better options so keep looking! Update: It is now just terrible as any remnants of grind consistency has vanished. Dont buy this.

You probably don't need this, but it's a really top notch grinder
My old grinder played possum on me - it seems like it died than sprang back to life after I had researched & ordered this. I could have canceled the order, but I decided to splurge and get it anyway. I am happy that I kept it. It really is so much faster than other grinders. I think my old grinder took over a minute to grind what this does in under 15 seconds. And I love that you can set the grind time and it turns off when done. So a couple of buttons presses and 15 seconds later, I have my coffee ground for the day. It is a bit loud, but not nearly as loud as the reviews had me worried about. If you are standing right next to it, it's annoying, but take a couple of steps away and it's fine. I think it might actually be no louder, and possibly even quieter, than my old burr grinder. I haven't tested them side by side, it's just my impression, not tested. The build quality seems fantastic - it is a SOLID piece of equipment. It is much heavier than you would expect it to be looking at it. I expect decades of performance from it. I really like the ground catcher too. My previous grinder had a hard plastic ground catcher and over the years it developed a million micro-cracks. I am not sure what this is made from, but I really like it. It's plastic, but it feels a bit like it has been coated with rubber. It makes it very grippy (so no worries about it slipping) especially when tapping it to get all the grounds out. I don't know what type of plastic it is, but it seems perfect for this.

Upgrade from Baratza Encore - was it worth the extra money?
Have used Baratza Encore for a number of years and been very happy with it. My only niggles were that cleaning was a little fiddly and there was insufficient grind size control at the espresso end of the dial. Essentially I had a choice of 2 settings that worked for my espresso machine with no fine tuning in between. When you first start using the Sette, be prepared for some frustrating results. My experience was that for the first 10 or so grinds, it was grinding way too fine and this was choking my espresso machine. However, Baratza support assured me that a bedding in process was necessary for the burrs to season and they were right, so I persevered with the suggested initial setting of 9E. I weigh my beans to the nearest 0.1 g into the hopper, and press preset 1 which is now fine tuned to exactly the right time to grind those beans. Retention in the burrs is less than 0.1g which I am very happy with. Cleaning is much easier than with the Encore and it is lovely to see how little coffee dust drops out when you do clean with the supplied wire brush. I do not intend to use grinder cleaning product - I prefer to clean manually once a week (or so!). It worked fine on the Encore. Grind speed is very impressive (compared to Encore), less "spitty" and it is a much much nicer looking piece of kit. (I have caught myself stroking it lovingly a couple of times). I now have to decide whether to keep the Encore for French Press grinds (Sette is primarily an espresso grinder but works well for Aeropress and Mokka - my other two favourite methods) or whether to purchase the "swappable" coarser burs which are an optional extra for this grinder. Very happy with my purchase. I am in the coffee anorak camp that believes it is better to spend on a good grinder than a good espresso machine! There is a part of me pining for the 270Wi but it was just too much of a price jump for my limited means.

Huge improvement over my old $800 Compak K3
I had my K3 grinder for almost 10 years but it required a part to be replaced which would have cost at least $400. I was generally having problems with my espresso making, probably due to the burrs also requiring replacement. Decided to see what was new in the grinder world and found the 270: in my price range and with generally good reviews. Took the plunge and I am delighted with this grinder. All of my espresso making problems went away but I gained so much more. The controls to set the grind size and quantity being ground are simple to use and powerful. Dialing in a grind was very easy and fast. The quality of the grounds is uniform and without clumps. I won't go into detail on everything but this is very close to being the perfect grinder for me. I only have 3, extremely minor complaints. Really, I'm just nitpicking. 1. It is quite loud. (But fast. My 14 sec. grind time using the K3 is now less than 7 sec.) 2. I find it a bit difficult to correctly position the portafilter. I blame myself and I plan to see if I can adjust things and make it work better. 3. It is messy. The area around the grinder collects quite a bit of grounds after awhile but they are easily cleaned up. Overall, I highly recommend this grinder and I'd buy it again if I needed to.
