the photo provided makes it look like it is round, I stressed over purchasing it because it didn't look like it would be able to get into the space and begin the opening process. in fact the item in falter than the photo lets on (as I said it looks round like a tapered dowel), the tip fits easily into the folded area behind the flap-fold and easily slices through the paper very nicely. I do suggest purchasing one if you are in the market for a really nice letter opener and also that the seller up-date the photo to show the size/shape more accurately.A very nice tool I will have for decades.

I ordered this letter opener for my Mother because she had been using a butter knife to open her mail...lol. She is very pleased with how well it works for her. I'm sure it is wonderful after a butter knife though! But it is very nice looking and definitely does what it is made to do! So put the knife down and order one! Hope this helps someone.

At 61, I have found the infinitely perfect letter opener. Almost makes me want to hire out as professional letter opener. Heavier than anticipated, that adds to its overwhelming amazingness. I've always purchased letter openers by sharpness of edge and point. Not going to do again. The rounded tip and edge are spot on perfect. The 'handle', while something I never would have designed into the product is again, spot on perfect. Does everything a letter opener should and I have never had such perfect cuts upon 'opening.' I will never recommend anything else and will be giving these as gifts. I will be looking into engraving, this is such a lovely and perfect piece of everyday function and need.UPDATE: A few weeks later, small scratches are starting to show up. They don't bother me a bit. I like the look of 'wear.' But I don't think I'll be giving them as gifts. It might bother some.

From the picture, it is not apparent how sturdy this was going to be. I love it so much I set it out on my desk instead of hiding it in a drawer. It adds a touch of class. I highly recommend it.

About five years ago I had it. I'd received my thousandth paper-cut opening a bill. It just wasn't worth it. I had a letter opener, and have used it ever since. The only bad thing, it's ugly.I wanted something modern and elegant. I read reviews and settled on this. It's perfect.In the hand if sits nicely. It's very heavy and feels of that heft. The point is thick but easily slips into the envelope.I saw lots of complaints that it's not sharp. Letter openers should NOT be sharp. There's a trick to using them so they don't tear the envelope. As you push against the envelope, you withdraw the letter opener. It's sort of like you're pushing it apart from the inside. Doing it like that, this sliced right through the envelope, even better than my old one.The only downside is that it's so high-gloss it gets easily covered in fingerprints. That's quickly remedied.

Great weight and perfect feel. It looks good on any desk without the loss of professionalism that toy sword and quirky letter openers give you.

The letter opener I have used for years broke and I wanted a new one. Amazon had a wide selection, and I chose this one because it is strong, very sleek and easy to use. AND it is made from one piece of metal which makes it impossible to break.

Modern generic design, looks good nice weight. The end of the paper knife could be finer, but not a major problem.

This thing is like a piece of art. Purchased this because of almost cutting my fingers using a paring knife to open letters. Saw this opener and thought it just looked beautiful. It was more than anyone needs to spend for a letter opener but it actually works great. There are no sharp edges and letters opens nicely. The handle is very heavy, which is nice and the whole thing is in a smooth silver finish. Love this thing.

Nicely weighted, comfortable to handle, with a surprising level of quality. Opens envelopes easily without the fear of cutting yourself. Certainly an upgrade from the typical letter opener. Highly recommend.

This letter opener is so sleek and elegant. It's easy to use and, despite what other reviews say, the edge is just the right sharpness to open any paper envelope (it's not supposed to be knife sharp!). It also makes for a great paper weight, or a stylish decor detail all on its own. I just love it. I would buy it again to give away as a gift.

Looks awesome, but it's quite a bit longer than I thought measuring at approximately 8.5 inches long. I was hoping it was shorter so that it can just go into my pen holder, but because it is top heavy and long it will tip my pen holder over. And I should've realized this, but fingerprint marks are quite visible after use. It works fine opening letters and looks great, but just not what I expected.
