Asynchronous and Galvanically Isolated C5D is a high-performance portable headphone amplifier featuring digital volume control, multi-position bass boost, dual gain, and asynchronous digital-to-analog conversion compatible with iPad, iPhone, and all UAC1 compatible operating systems. Perfect Channel Balance Digital stepped attenuation with zero-crossing detection and 1dB attenuation steps provide smooth volume adjustment at all volume levels, even with sensitive IEMs. Dual LDO Regulation High performance audio starts with clean power. Supply rails are filtered by impressive TPS7A4700 and TPS7A3301 regulators to achieve ultra low supply noise at a constant output voltage of +/-7V. Smart USB Charging Powered by a large 1200mAh Li-Ion battery, C5D quickly charges from any USB port (computer, tablet charger, cell phone charger, etc.). A single LED indicates battery status: solid green while on, blinking while battery is low, or blue while charging. Configurable Sound C5D features dual gain levels and a multi-position bass boost toggle for highly customizable sound. Low Jitter C5D's asynchronous PCM5102A DAC operates with ultra low jitter, symmetrical pairs measuring below -112dB. Low Output Impedance C5D's extremely low output impedance of 0.62 ohms ensures natural frequency response with all headphones.

Great audio engineering, poor product design.
I have quite mixed feelings about this amp/dac. I'm not an audiophile, so take my review as you wish. First - i do notice a wonderful sound improvement using this while commuting and plugged in to my iPhone. So as far as the essential core purpose of this amp, it nails it. The music sounds richer, the bass is much fuller (there are 3 settings for bass amplification), and the instruments have more clear separation. All in all, the sound is great. The red color is bright and sharp. Battery life was decent, i thought better than the last FiiO I had.The negatives are all in the user experience and product design. First of all, it comes with one connector, but you need to buy a second from apple to plug in to that connector in order to plug it into your lightning connector to source music directly and use it as a DAC. I think they should engineer a connector and include it (charge more if you need to) so that one cord can go direct from amp to phone. It's awkward to have two. The metal box itself is sharp edged. Not necessarily to cut yourself, but when holding your phone and the amp, you do have to be careful not to scratch your glass with it. And by comparison, the FiiO amp/dac is soft cornered with a softer material case too that is less likely to scratch. This feels raw by comparison. Further complaints: the switches are not intuitive. Base controls are up for off, down for medium and middle for max. Huh? The power switch is unlabeled on and off. The battery and charge modes are a bit confusing. if you accidentally leave it in charge mode while playing from your phone, it will drain your phone battery to charge it while it is playing. And worst of all...if you have it set to On and stop playing music, it will still drain the battery. In other words, even if you remove your headphones from the jack and disconnect your phone from the amp...it will still drain. I made this mistake and it drained over night.Despite these quirks, i give it 4 stars because the audio is great. I just wish they had a better product designer. This feels like it was made by engineers who didn't think about the user experience. I'm still
