Great Little Gadget
love this what a great little helper with my sewing. Helps me push my fabric along while sewing. It turns out its sturdier then I expected. However keep it away from the needle.

Yes, it is a cheap plastic thingy...
Yes, it is a cheap plastic thingy that you need if: you quilt, you are an advanced to intermediate sewer, or you are a brave sewer who has sewn through one of your fingers at least once, if you have ever reached for a metal object to unclog or unstick something knowing that the coat hanger or screwdriver that may scratch/rip/poke a hole in something that can't have a hole in it or you don't want scratched Yes, it is a cheap plastic thingy, but that actually gives it a benefit that those metal thingies don't have - it won't ruin anything. When it first arrived, I looked at it and threw it in my sewing cabinet thinking that I might use it someday for something sooner or later. It only took two days to become useful. I have used it to unstick a metal object from between my cabinet and my stainless steel oven - no scratches. I have used it to poke out something stuck in my vacuum cleaner - didn't poke a hole in the hose - and you can wash it and it doesn't rust. I am currently using it to control the ease and the edges of my fabric while sewing curves into blocks in my quilt. I find myself reaching for it frequently. Yes, it is a cheap piece of plastic that may break, and I will replace it every time it does as it is just so useful if you remember that you have it. I am still trying to figure out something useful to do with that hole in the 'handle' area. I guess it may be to hang it around your neck. Perhaps when I am not using it for over 300 seams that may be a good idea. I sew a lot of tissue knits which can be hard to control - perhaps I can release it from my grasp then and hang it around my neck. Another job for the purple thang.

Defense of The Purple Thang
I have read some negative reviews on this about The Purple Thang and I'd like to throw my oar in. I've been using this item for approximately 10 years. I finally had to order a new one because my old one disappeared. A lot of the comments are directed around the "Thang" being less than useful for pushing fabric through the machine. Certainly less useful than a traditional stiletto. In this regard, I agree. A sharp stiletto is an ideal product for that purpose. That is also almost never how I use my "thang."I use it for lots of other things. I use it as an on the fly finger iron. I use it to get under contrary seams to even them out, I use it to smooth corners when I am turning lined appliqué. I use it to smooth the inner edges of hand turned appliqué. It has a slot, so more than once I have used it to thread and re-thread ribbon and thin cord. I use it as a hand extender when I am ironing tight spots and need to hold my fabric without getting burnt. I've used it to turn over the edges of my appliqué pieces to template material when I'm using the starch/sizing method. In other words, I use this tool ALL the time. This is a tool that if you have one purpose in mind (stiletto), you may be disappointed. But, if you put it right out amongst your frequently used sewing tools, you may be surprised at how often you will find a less sharp, smoother object like this can come in useful. I've reached for it 1/2 a dozen times this week, only to frustratedly realize, once again, that I've lost mine. I'll be relieved when the new one arrives.

It's good to have a little pointer that can get close ...
It's good to have a little pointer that can get close to that sewing machine needle instead of your finger. You really don't want to sew your fingertip and that usually results in a fun little trip to the emergency room. So, use this little pointer instead and be able to stay home. Home is where the wine is anyway. It also keeps the seams down so you don't have to wiggle jiggle them down as you come up on them while sewing. As usual, it's no fun to get the seam ripper out because you have a bent over seam in the middle of the line of sewing and no MATTER how much you try to iron that sucker FLAT, it won't go flat enough to make it look nice. So just hold down the seam in the first place with this purple thang and all will be easier. You COULD get a metal pointer that would do the same thing as this purple thang, but....I don't know about YOU but I tend to sew over things sometimes and I have found that it is better to sew over a plastic thang more than a metal thing. Twang goes the needle in the sewing maching....just sayin'. So, ya...buy this. Life will be better.
