Excellent advanced strategy game
This game is a great spin on Worker placement Eurogames. I do not think this game was difficult to learn, but I learn and play a lot of new games. I would consider this an advanced strategy game and would hesitate to recommend it to new players. For players who have played a fair number of modern strategy games, this game is a great choice. What makes this game stand out from the crowd is that each of the workers has needs and wants, ranging from new work clothes and sausages to fur coats and steam engines, and you only end the game when enough of your population of workers has had their needs met. The other thing that feels unique to me is that there are dozens of resources to use and strategies to explore. This game gets me and I'm excited to play it again the next chance I get.

One of my favorites
I bought this game fearing it would be too complex for my friends. Despite being almost 3 hours long the first time we played it, we actually had a blast! Everyone loved it and next day we all wanted to meet again and play it once more. I think it actually gets even better the more you play it. I think the game is rich in strategies, but quite modest in mechanics, allowing everyone to familiarize with it even in the learning process. I find every aspect of the game very well-thought-out, and I haven't found any flaws yet. Every game is quite different because it depends a lot on the cards not only you but your opponents have been dealt. Also, each of you can take very different approaches, and as a player, you can change your path to winning based on what other people is doing. I love this game because even if you don't win, you feel very satisfied at the end, feeling you have built an industrial empire, and have been useful anyway.

Love this game
I recommend watching a video of how to play this game before beginning. It was confusing reading the directions, but once you understand the rules it really is pretty simple. Alot of strategy involved but very fun!

An absorbing game playable in about 2 hours
Another quality design from Martin Wallace - this time for the publisher Kosmos. My group found this game an absorbing challenge - once you learn the system. It isn't that difficult, but it isn't all that intuitive, either. But once everyone knew what they were doing, we all just slid into this zone of concentration, with the constant slapping down of completed objective cards. Very cool design.

Game for gamers
This has become one of my favorite games. My only complain isn't about the game itself its about not having an insert and taking forever to set up. I bought inserts from etsy which organized everything pretty good and makes it way easier to set up.

Great new economic building game
First heard of this game last year and have been waiting for the English version to hit the shelves. I enjoy economic engine building games and this is great!! Long setup for the many tiles but well worth the time. I lost my first two plays so far but still thinks it’s great fun.

Good One
It's a medium complexity game ideal for fans of the original game and worker placement / engine builder lovers.

Fantastic economic engine building, let the Industrial Age begin!
It's the dawn of the Industrial Age and you want to have the most thriving island with trade routes linking the old world to the new and build a streamlined economic engine on your own personal player board in Anno 1800. I cannot say how accurately this superb game implements the video game that it is based from, but the designer Martin Wallace is well known for many other excellent games and has made Anno 1800 a game that flows perfectly from start to finish, there's not a single squeaky wheel on this ride and you are in for a real treat when you bring this to the table. You can start analyzing an optimal path to proceed from the near beginning as you are dealt a small hand of cards that are the starts of the soon to be booming population of your island. As farmers, workers, artisans, engineers, and investors they are here to work for you and provide the resources you need to begin production and upgrades to the city infrastructure as well as build up your fleet of trade and exploration ships. In return they want certain goods or luxuries to keep them satisfied and as you meet their requests for things like canned goods, beer, fur coats, coffee, and later more advanced machinery such as steam engines, auto carriages, or a phonograph they will in turn provide you with end game influence points and one time use abilities to help grow your engine. Things start out small with simple farmers just wanting sausage and beer, but as your city evolves Artisans might want things like glasses or pocket watches and if you make them happy they may invite new inhabitants to your island. I say you can start planning from the beginning because you can always look first at your most difficult to fulfill requirements and being walking backwards from there. You can actually follow the game's elaborate technology tree backwards and see what moves you'll need to take to get from point A to point Z, and yes sometimes there are a lot of steps, but the rewards more than make up for the effort. With a generous amount of randomized end game goal cards and an equally plentiful supply of population cards you will find a lot of replayability and new experiences with each play. With so many different wants from your population you may have entirely different needs for how you build your city versus an opponent, however later as you gain new citizens you may all a sudden find yourself needing a technology you didn't develop, so then the game's simple trade mechanic comes in to save the day but also provides a benefit to your opponent for trading for their goods. Will you risk taking the extra time on your own to try and develop the needed path to get the good you currently need or is it more beneficial to line the pockets of your opponent with gold to speed up the process?Only you can decide what is the best path to take, but in this game time is extremely important as there is not a set end game trigger. The game ends when any one person plays the last card from their hand, and then allows for one last cleanup turn for all players. Since you will gain cards each time you get a new member added to your population your small hand size will easily double in just a few rounds and you'll wonder how you can ever get everything done with only one action per turn. Anno is perfectly designed to prevent that lock up in game play that you'd expect to happen, through expansion of your island, trade, and exploration all players have a perfect little puzzle to solve and all the pieces will eventually fall into place. About two-thirds through the game everyone should be able to look at their remaining cards and visualize their turns and how to best complete their remaining cards.Anno 1800 gets a cozy space in my game collection with some of my other must have games. One production change I'd love to see is larger player aids that are a bit easier to read, other than that everything is good quality and that excellent ship on the box front cover makes this a game to display. My only game play complaint, or at least something I don't like are several of the population cards that have a "discard two cards" ability when played, which can end a game abruptly and as a player you have to start watching for that possibility once anyone gets down to three cards. Again though as this game is extremely balanced there are enough of those specific ability cards that multiple players may encounter one of them once or more during the game so in the end they work well as a game mechanic. This is a minor thing that does nothing to deter me from loving every play of Anno 1800, players in our Group have found that a great end game strategy and one that as I said you can watch for and hopefully counter with your last cleanup turn.

Worker placement meets 7 Wonders
It's different. Resource production is like a mix of worker placement and 7 Wonders resources as you need to place a worker to generate a good but it doesn't physically exist (like in 7 Wonders) and on your next turn that worker doesn't produce again so it's "use it or lose it".So far I've played it 1 and 2 player. Even with 2 players it feels like a solo game as you don't mind if they get a tile you wanted as you can just trade for it (which might be better). I like solo games so it's a keeper.

Great game, storage within the box could be better designed
Great little gem.Bit tricky to get at first but once you understand the basics its a breeze. All the pieces are outlined on their faces what you need to get them up the top and what you get down the bottom, with each colour coded for the pieces you use.Even the girlfriend loved it.Would give a 3 out of 5 for the box design though. It's nice that they give you a decent amount of zip lock bags but considering the amount of pieces it would have been nicer to have a dedicated insert to keep it organised like with monopoly.
