Still, it's refreshing to know this series has some life left in it. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Portable Mario Party Game *by J***G on November 13, 2017* I preordered this in hopes of getting a small Hudson Soft experience from Nd Cube's latest Mario Party installment. When I received it however, I wasn't impressed. Too much had changed. The board game mode removed the turn order, the duels relied too much on a random number generator, and I thought less of the minigames. I was not receptive of the changes. After one playthrough, I tossed the game aside and never looked back. Until recently. Two weeks ago, I had an inkling to play a quick game. I was in an area with a long wait so I looked through my pocket of games and came upon Mario Party: Star Rush. I thought I'd give it another try since it'd been a while and I wanted to play a portable Mario Party game. I found myself engrossed in the gameplay despite its differences from what I'd known from Mario Party 1-6. There are many strengths in this game that can keep you entertained for hours but it's not without its flaws. The board game mode has changed; instead of a turn order, every player moves at the same time. Players can collect up to five allies like Peach, Mario, Yoshi, etc and each ally can roll a die to add more move spaces to the player's die. Each ally has their own special type of die that can be beneficial if chosen as the leader. For example, Rosalina's die mirrors a player's rank so if a player is in 4th place, the number 4 will appear on more faces of her die. Allies also give players an edge in minigames that require collection or mashing buttons. The more allies a player has, the more their team can collect. Coin hoarders like myself will be happy to find that, after the final boss fight, every 10 hard-earned coins will buy a star. Beautifully rendered maps have their own mechanics to keep the game going and special nodes that specific allies can activate for coins. The non-luck based minigames are an absolute treat. Most of the minigames and the boss fights are fun, intuitive, and are reminiscent of older minigames. Unlocking new game modes and allies feels rewarding. As I said earlier, the developers have completely eliminated the ability to duel players 1v1 with fun minigames. When you land on the same space as another player, a luck-based mechanic—like rolling dice or flipping a card—determines whether or not a player loses an ally or coins if they have no allies. Items in the game have significantly less variety. There is also no way to quantify how many turns you have left as there is no longer a turn order; it's not a huge problem but I wouldn't play this if you're on a time crunch. As for amiibo, I don't have any that's compatible with Star Rush so I can't give any opinions on it until I get some. There are unlockable game modes that range from complex Minesweeper to stiff games like a wonky attempt at a rhythm game. These are worth a try at least once but can be passed up otherwise. Overall, I would recommend Mario Party: Star Rush if you can get over the fact that it's nothing like Mario Party 1-6. It's got moderately high replayability, it's portable, and players can utilize Download Play. Star Rush can do without the plethora of luck-based minigames and return duel minigames. I like my minigames to require at least a little more effort rather than losing because of a random number generator.
