No, it does not have an app at all.

It can be set to any measurement type.

does this count miles as well as steps?

It tracks distance in miles or kilometers, steps (both total steps and aerobic), calories; but, it does not have a stopwatch function. My biggest problem is forgetting to remove it from my pocket before laundering my walking shorts. I will survive on or two trips through the washing machine; which is why I'm on my third one. They are great pedometers that don't need to be laundered.
