Montana: A History of Two Centuries

It is not a comprehensive coverage of Montana History.
According to this book the Northern Pacific Railroad never went through Butte. The book wrote the railroad went through Logan followed the Missouri to Helena and then over the divide to Garrison. One of reasons it went to Butte was to supply coal from Red Lodge to the smelters in Butte. That was prior to the smelter at Anaconda.

One of the best historical books about Montana
One of the best historical books about Montana. The author was a prior president of Montana State University-Bozeman. He was publicly chastised for not allowing the college rodeo association to distribute free tobacco products during the college rodeo championship. Which was held in Bozeman every year. As a result, the rodeo association never held finals in Bozeman again. The President-author was publicly hated, and eventually resigned and died of a heart attack in the bozeman-airport parking lot.

Marvalous Montana
Wonderful history on Montana. It's a bit dated since it was published in 1990, but the historians who wrote it are knowledgeable and passionate about the state and it shows. Great introduction to Montana and those folks who live there. I've read it twice in the past 20 years and have enjoyed it both times.

Details are interesting.
Although this is a revised edition, this was my text book when I took Montana History. M. Malone was my professor. Interesting, detailed and well writted book! Love it!

very concise
I was looking for research info for a class project, so to be fair, it was not what I needed. I was hoping for more history of post-war Montana.
