Codex Deluxe Set

This game has so much depth it's hard to believe. I've been following Sirlin for a while and never gotten one of his games before now, and I'm so happy I did. The price was pretty steep but it comes with so many cards and pieces it does feel justified. If you have a game night or a friend who really likes to play card games this will totally be worth the investment! You will need two extra binders for two of the factions though, just to warn you.

This game was bought for my husband and teenage sons. They love it! Keeps them busy for hours and soothes their inner geek. Lots of references to other geekiness which they love.

Its a great game but one of the mats was improperly rolled inside the box. The mats are made of the same material as a mouse pad and this one was wadded up into the box- leaving several permanent creases that make it so the mat will not properly lay down. This is a problem since it is where you place cards as you play the game. We’ve tried heavy books with water bottles on top, ironing, ect... but the folds seem to be permanent. A game this expensive should atleast be properly packed to protect the contents. I would avoid this version of the game and just get the cheaper one since the mats might be unusable.

Fantastic formula that would take ages to get old.

Codex is an amazing new take on the Customizable Card Game. Instead of building a deck from a block of cards, you instead build a Codex binder from the 7 factions within the game. Each faction (with the exception of the Neutral Starter decks) has 3 heroes with their own set of cards called a Spec. You choose 3 heroes and their respective Specs for your Codex. From there, it becomes very similar to modern Deck Builders where you begin with a deck of Starter cards and then build your deck as the game progresses. The strategy value in this game is enormous, something that becomes immediately apparent once you start playing. A huge change compared to other CCGs is that it's not collectible at all- once you have each faction, you have the whole game(all of which are in this Deluxe set)! There won't be new sets released every few months, such as with Magic the Gathering. Now, this might lead you to think that the strategies and gameplay will be limited since there will be no new content released, but the way you and your opponent can customize your Codex to play will keep the game interesting for years and years to come. So, why would you want this Deluxe Set compared to the Core or Starter Sets? Well, this box contains all of the Red, Green and Grey cards from the Core and Starter as well as all of the marker chits to keep track of values, but it also has the Expansion cards that are set to release over the next few months for the Blue, Black, White and Purple sets. It has 6 custom binders with low-cut pockets to use for your Codex as opposed to the 2 in the Core. It has 2 mousepad material playmats and 3 cardstock mats for multiplayer games. Lastly, it has exclusive Map cards that change up the rules a bit for custom games. Plus, the box is designed to hold EVERYTHING. Even if you sleeve all of your cards! In short, if you're sick of games making your decks irrelevant immediately after a new set is released, and you want to experiment with tons of strategies out of one box, Codex is the game for you. If you want the absolute best and complete way of getting one of the best new card games in years, this Deluxe Set is the way to go.

Overall my feelings are still somewhere between mixed and undecided about the game Codex: Card Time Strategy. But I can at least explain what this set is: This is a limited edition big box containing the cards from the Codex Core Set, the Codex Starter set as well as the first two expansions ( Whitestar Order vs Vortoss Conclave and Flagstone Dominion vs Blackhand Scourge ), plus kickstarter and preorder bonus material. If you just want to play the game, it is cheaper to buy all of the individual sets. The deluxe edition is for people who like limited editions and want to get the exclusives ( additional binders, mousepad mats, map cards, huge box ).
