Q: What is the purpose of the Teflon sheets?

One purpose is to protect your mat from getting printed from larger images placed on blanks for sublimating. It also acts as a pressing sheet for protection from vinyl, etc. being pressed onto fabric.

Q: will steam from a steam iron leak through to surface beneath? Looking for larger ironing surface for ironing fabric & quilt blocks

Sorry I don’t know because I use it for my heat press.

Q: How does this compare to a wool pressing mat?

This mat is odorless, but the wool mat is not completely. It's better for heat press, wool pressing mat better for ironing.

Q: Can this be used with a clamshell press?

As far as I know. I use it for my multiple Cricut heat machines. It is very well insulated.
