Frostgrave: Into the Breeding Pits (Frostgrave, 2)

A fantastic expansion that combines theme and fun
Finally finished the book and I got to say that I love it.Where the liche lord was more of a giant campaign with some stuff you can throw into your game this is more of a true expansion. It's chuck full of optional rules and scenarios that can be used separately or in the main campaign as you like. It adds a lot of flavor and variety to the base game if desired. I love the bestiary. My favorite is the traps that can be added to the game that add some fun random tension and risk to the games. I think you'll love the beastcrafter spells as you can bring more animals into your party or essentially change your wizard into a powerful hybrid of human and animal giving you both advantages and disadvantages. It's really coolI think it's actually pretty cool how they use the gnolls in the game. None of the scenarios require them per say. They are a random encounter on the monster chart and could potentially show up as a few individuals or as an entire warband. you may also use them as part of your warband if you'd like but are essentially the same stats as your regular warband members. They don't have to be gnolls figures either as in the fluff after the city band human fighters in the areas the wizards bred hybrids off of hyenas, rats, dogs, and cats. So essentially any animal hybrid model could be used. You could also potentially make your entire warband from gnolls if you'd like to which I find really neat. All in all a must buy for any fan of Frostgrave for the traps and additional options alone not to mention the awesome.monsters, scenarios, underground rules, new warband members and treasure.

Whoa man, nobody said your Wizard was a BITER! I'm out.
In my personal opinion "Into The Breeding Pits" is the weakest expansion for Frostgrave. That's not to say that it's bad, per se, but it spends most of its time outlining the rules for dungeon-crawling down in the dark tunnels under the city and adding all kinds of traps to the game. That's... ok... but nothing there is really necessary. There are a couple of new Soldiers that can be hired and there is nothing wrong with them.It introduces a new kind of Magic... the magic of Beastcraft. This kind of magic can only be learned in three phases at levels 5, 10, and 15, and you must have gained access to it somehow beforehand. The Beastcrafter is... fine? It turns your Wizard into something akin to a Druid/Animal-Hybrid, making them more powerful and giving them access to more and better Animals for their warband, but at the cost of making hiring regular dudes more expensive. Nobody wants to work for someone that creeps them out and they suspect of being a Furry. :)There's a new category of magic with a small number of spells called Reaction Magic. I don't really like the name for this kind of magic, it's kind of over-generic, but it does what it says on the box. If something bad is about to happen to you and you could cast a spell on your next activation you can sacrifice your ability to cast a spell on your next turn and cast a Reaction Spell out of turn order to try and save yourself. These are interesting but situational spells... I'd like to see more of these as the game grows. The Scenarios are solid. The new Monsters are quite good. If you have no interest in dungeon crawling or Beastcraft magic then you're at least getting a few new Soldier types, new magic items, new scenarios and the Reaction Spells. Overall this is still a good expansion and I'm glad I picked up, but it will probably mostly be used for the Traps, Monsters and the stats for the Gnolls.

Another great expansion
While I have some minor, taste, disagreements, they are not enough to drop a star from this expansion. You're able to have a different spin on between campaign missions, get access to new magical items, spells, traps, hirelings, and run into new critters including armed gnolls (which is great as one of the plastic kits is now a much cheaper way to fill in for a deep pool of random encounters as well as supply you with a warband). As usual, these books do a much better job then most organizing the book in a way that makes it easy to find the information you are looking for

Great new scenario rules
This expansion includes rules to take the game underground into the tight confines of a dungeon, sewer system, or tunnels. It adds new enemies, new soldiers, new spells, and rules for dungeon traps. It's a nice change from the ruined city environments of the main game.

Great addition to Frostgrave. The new rules include traps, secret passages and new schools of magic. Though I'm not fully sold yet on how the traps work I found this supplement enjoyable especially the increment style of the Elixir of the Beastcrafter.

Great addition to Frostgrave
Fast, furious and fun. Frostgrave removes the crunch of other mini war games but keeps all the fun. This accessory is another great addition.

New direction in the Frozen City
OK so this is the 2nd supplement to Frostgrave the skirmish level wargame system. The first supplement is Thaw of the Lich Lord, which is a expansion set in a district of Felstad and this expansion takes us in a totally different direction. Now we are heading underground. The book itself is 64 pages, but some of this is editorial and advertising. So around 61 pages of new rules, characters, spells and scenarios.I like this supplement over Thaw mainly because the new spells are more useful to the character I play. That is purely personal and not a dig at the other book.We get 5 new scenario's to explore from the book 2 new soldiers to add to your warband. The chance to learn how to become a beast crafter, if your that way inclined. And too many new spells and beasts to name.Once more a great expansion to the core rule set, that you will need to play. Beautiful illustrations throughout and inspirational examples of the models from the official range. If you want to delve into Felstad dark and dingy underworld this is what you need to take you on the next part of your adventures. Be warned though many have walked these paths before you, not all have returned.
