Works if you have a fence. Maybe not if you don't have a fence. Instructions are designed to confuse.
Just installed today. Works great if you already have a fence to slow them down. This will surely prevent them from digging under the fence. But in open areas with no obstacles, they'll eventually learn they can run right through. I left the gate open to see if my Ted would go through. It took him 10min to discover if he runs through, he won't get shocked.I was initially concerned about the contacts on the collar being uncomfortable for Ted because they look like two spikes poking at his throat, but he didn't try to shake it off, gag or seem uncomfortable at all. After a couple of hours, I took the collar off to install his dog tag. When I put the collar back on, he didn't try to fight it. You obviously don't want to tighten it too much. I still wish there was a better way to do this without those metal posts. The installation and initial settings are not intuitive, but I'm hoping now that I have it set up I won't have to go through the process again. I almost shouldn't have read the instructions because they left me more confused. The instructions are very wordy for just for the sake of being wordy. There are all kinds of proprietary terms. There's a glossary of some terms, but it doesn't contain the terms that will confuse you. If you're confused by this, it's exactly how I felt when I read those instructions. For example, setting the intensity of shock (which they call "correction")... You'd think with only 1 button on the collar, it would be easier to set this but you press, wait for light, within 5 sec, press again, wait for lights to flash, count the flashes. Press again an unknown number of times.... I still don't get it. But I managed to set it on the level I wanted and I hope it stays there. As for wiring it up, I thought I had it figured out by just by looking at the contacts on the transformer and the control unit. Then I thought I had it wrong after I read the confusing instructions five times. So I said to heck with the instructions, hooked it up my way and I guess it turned out to be the right way.Anywho, it works in my application. Setup was dumb, but that's done. Now I can stop hunting down my dog.

my 40lb husky will walk right through this fence, ...
my 40lb husky will walk right through this fence, but she's really tough, I doubt smaller dogs would, but we now use it with a privacy fence since she is a desperate explorer, and it works well enough. We hadn't even started using it until February 2014 and by July 2014 one of the prongs fell off the collar, as well as a 2nd collar we had bought, while the dogs were wearing them, so we have no idea where the prongs are, no extras came with the collars, so now we have one usable collar :( otherwise the thing is alright to set up, you can use any old wire, we bought doorbell wire to extend ours after we installed our fence. we also broke the thing for the batteries and just bought replacement batteries for cheap instead of petsafe's batteries, cuz that's just a ripoff.all in all it's an alright fence, but the collars are junk.

Arf Arf We can run free in our yard!
We purchased this after examining everything that was available for small dogs. Back around 1997 I installed the heavy Invisible Fence wire around the perimeter of our two acre property for the dogs I had back then. So all I really needed was the transmitter, flags, and collars. The wire seems like such a waste as it'll never get used. And the flags...well...useless.We have two Havanese puppies and needed small collars. We were pleased with the collar size. When they were 8 lbs the collars seemed a bit big for them, but now at 12 lbs they seem to be no trouble at all for them. As a matter of fact, they eagerly wait for us to put them on because they know it means they get to use the entire property to run and play. Anyone who's seen Havanese in 'run like hell' mode knows how much they enjoy all that running room.In spite of all the battery complaints we're still on the original batteries. We turn the collars off when they're not on the dogs. Some days they'll wear the collars for 8-10 hours, other days just 2 or 3 hours. They also have a very large fenced-in playpen I built for when we want them contained, but because of the freedom they get with the collars the playpen is mostly used at night when skunks and racoons are out roaming.I plan to modify the battery holders to use much less expensive aftermarket batteries. My brother-in-law did this to his collars and said it works beautifully. There are YouTube videos explaining how and it's pretty simple. [ UPDATE: Some of those videos go to extremes for what is really a very simple operation. If you examine the battery holder closely you'll see a fine line where a ring of plastic encapsulates the battery. A snip with a pair of small diagonal cutters...the kind used in electronics...and you can peel that ring right off. Smooth it a bit with a file and you're done. Total time...less than a minute. The battery fits tightly, so you'll need a pair of needle nose pliers to remove it. From then on you can use batteries that are 5 for $10 instead of paying $9 for one.]I didn't use the flags included with the kit. They're even more of a waste than the wire because they can't be used for anything else. They're small and impossible to insert in hard ground. I went to ebay and purchased flags that are the same as came with my Invisible Fence 15 years ago. I used about 180 of them. They're durable and have held up well. I've just started removing every other one and the ones I've pulled are still usable.Training our pups was too easy. We walked the perimeter with them a few times, telling them 'No' whenever they'd approach a flag. After one of them got shocked and looked at me with a 'what the heck was that' look on his face his sister decided she wasn't going anywhere near those flags even though she's the more adventurous one. After they went off leash and followed me into the vegetable garden that's outside the flags they both learned the lesson and haven't challenged the flags since. However, one time the male did run through the fence while chasing a squirrel. This is when we were training them to pass through the boundary when on leash. He and his sister were barking like fools because he couldn't get back in the yard. He was really upset until I went out and got him. I leashed him, turned off the collar, and then led him on leash back into the yard. The trickiest part of training was teaching them that on leash they could cross the boundary, off leash they could not. My wife walks them nearly every morning and we wanted them to cross the boundary confidently when on leash. We're happy that training is complete and effective. There's no hassle at all putting the collars on them. As soon as we pick them up they come up to us and sit quietly so they can get their freedom collars. And then it's off to adventuring. My wife and I get great joy from watching Fred and Ginger run loose in our yard. They can explore in the wooded area, chase squirrels and birds, chase each other, run out to the front to greet visitors and we can be comfortable in the knowledge that they know the boundaries and won't go running off. So far this system has been great for us and my in-laws and we recommend it highly.
