Very nicely done. Tom does a wonderful job getting very specific about a limited number of flies. I really enjoy the approach. Personally, I would have given the space devoted to saltwater flies to more trout flies, but I understand why this space is given. The author also devotes not a small amount of space devoted to explain the selection and qualities of materials specific to each of the flies. That feature alone makes this book worth the price. I dig this book.

This is the one fly-tying book any angler would ever need.
Simply put, this book answers: if I was stuck on an island or in a river with only one box of flies, what would I bring and how would I tie them? I am overwhelmed by the books and websites showing 1,000s of patterns to tie AND fish. What's great about Tom's book is that it showcases the best fresh and saltwater flies: those essential patterns that should be staples in any box now or 20 years from now. I appreciate the complete pattern instructions and recipes for the original fly as well as important variations, combined with beautiful, extra-large step-by-step photos. The full-page "portraits" of each pattern are beautiful, and the interviews with the pattern originators and history of each fly really set this book apart. It works for both the veteran angler/fly-tyer and the novice as an introductory gift. Highly recommended!
