The best first-person account of the trapper era that I have read.
Amazing tales of a trapper who was there for a lot of the interesting action. You get a sense of the interactions among the fur companies, the various tribes, and their shifting alliances, the amazing endurance, resourcefulness, and also the callousness and brutality of these men. You do need to filter fact from tale, which the notes help with, but hearing a first person account is so much better than reading a dry history!

A good account of the trppers and mountain men who were the first white men to explore the Northwest
This is the account of Joe Meeks, who told Francis Victor of his days as a Trapper in the late 1830's-1840's in the Northwest - what would become Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Oregon. Francis Victor collected these accounts and they were published in 1870. Clearly there were some exaggerations and embellishments to some of the stories, but many of these tales were corroborated by other sources. Meeks and his friends lived incredible lives in conditions that are hard to conceive of in the 21st century.

Extremely enjoyable read! Have read several stories of Joe ...
Extremely enjoyable read! Have read several stories of Joe Meek, but this time had the feeling I was listening to Joe himself. However, after turning page 265...I realized there was a volume two. So much yet untold. My volume two should arrive next week.
