It's unlikely that it will adhere to a mesh screen as used on a garage door because most screens these days are non-ferrous.

Would these be to heavy for a name badge on a t-shirt?

Depends on the name badge. Is it a lightweight material or heavier material? I use mine with no problem on tee shirts, but have had problems with one from a different organization that is a heavier material.
