High School for Magical Beings.
I thoroughly enjoyed this magical fantasy, in fact I enjoyed it so much that I bought the box set of the first three books. Maeve Rhodes, a 17 year old orphan and her 14 year old brother, Finley live in a foster home at the start of the novel. One night Maeve sneaks out and finds an old lady who has been attacked, stopping to help her, she little realises that this caring action is about to change her entire life! Without giving anything away, Maeve discovers that she has magical powers and she and Finley are off to Spellcrest Academy. The book is full of suspense and excitement, Maeve finds her life is at risk as her powers are very unusual, her room mates are a shy elf and a moody nephilim and she has a crush on her senior adviser. Michael Pierce writes well and the characters are well drawn, my only criticism is that the book ends on a cliffhanger, I don't usually bother to continue with series where the author does this but have made an exception in this case. Frankly, the book is good enough not to need this tactic, most people who enjoy a novel will buy at least one sequel. Spellcrest Academy is not Hogwarts and this is not Harry Potter fanfiction, that being said fans of Harry will enjoy these books.

GREAT READ
Maeve Rhodes is not your typical Good Samaritan. However, when she stumbles upon a fallen, elderly woman, she stops and tries to do the right thing. Little does she know that this chance encounter will forever change the direction of her life.Marked with a new tattoo emblazoned across her chest and struggling to control a whole host of new powers, Maeve finds her life spiraling out of control. That is, until one more chance encounter offers an explanation… and a privileged opportunity to attend Spellcrest Academy.Paired with a shy elf and a moody Nephilim, Maeve quickly takes to her new home at the premier magical institution. Not to mention the dreamy senior advisor whom, for some idiotic reason, she can’t stop thinking about. Love at first sight is sappy sh—crap for fairy tales, not real life. However, she can’t deny the instant connection. As the school year progresses, Maeve discovers her invitation to the academy might not have been so innocent after all. Sinister forces want her unique abilities and are willing to kill for them.Maeve doesn't just need to survive her classes, she must survive the plots against her, a decades-old magical war, and following her capricious heart. She’s never been a stranger to diving into danger. But this time, she might be in over her head.If you’re a fan of Bella Forrest or Leia Stone, then this will be one hell of a ride you won’t want to miss.Wow... this one was definitely different then any other magical novels I have read. This is a brilliantly written story about a normal girl who was not born magical but wakes up after an incident to find herself now magical. This story is her journey through finding herself, finding her way and learning to harness her abilities.I loved the whole story line this is taking.Wonderfully written. I love the characters and their interaction. This is filled with with some twists and turns and an amazing ending that I didn't expect to happen.I can't wait to read more of Maeves' story and see what happens next in the Academy!Really enjoyed and recommend reading.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Not to be missed.
This story is amazing! I could't stop reading it, and was about to push on with book 2, of this 2 book series when I saw book 3 on pre-order. This is such a great story, a young girl being given powerful magic, but wanting her brother to share it with her. An academy with hidden secrets all mixed together to make not just a great story, but one that would make a great film. If it had said 3 books at the start, with one still to come, if I'm honest, I would have waited for number 3. I hate having to wait for anything, which ofcause is my own fault. I'v read the intro. to book 3, and I'm disappointed. I get the feeling it could have been covered in the 2 books. There is even a feeling that it could go on for longer. This is just me, but I am hoping that it does end in 2 books, and that 3, and any others are just more adventures. Which I would welcome. I would advice anyone to read this, it meets all ages. I truly feel however, it would be better to wait for all 3 before doing so. Will post a review after reading book 2, hope I'm wrong.

Amazing new series!
This is the first book in Spellcrest Academy series by Michael Pierce and I loved it! Michael gives the readers a new take on the supernatural community bringing together a dynamic group of characters with real personalities that the reader can relate too. Maeve and her younger brother Finley have been living in foster homes since there parent’s death, now they have left everything behind to start a new life at the Academy. There really is magic in the world full of witches, elves, angels, shifters & vampires and she has to learn fast to survive. This book is well written, fast paced, action packed and grabs your attention right from the beginning and keeps you in suspense until the very last page. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series Crestfallen!

Another excellent book
This book is an excellent beginning to what will hopefully be a series, not just two books. The main characters are Maeve Rhodes, a 17 yr old girl and her brother, 14 yr old Finley. They are orphans and currently live in a group foster home. One evening, when Maeve has snuck out of the foster home, she finds an elderly lady dying. The woman is Helena, a magical being known as a seamstress. She is dying after being injured by another magical being. When Maeve stops to help Helena, she gets more than she bargained for. Helena gives Maeve a crystal necklace as well as a needle with red thread that will help her in the future. And a large tattoo on her chest identifying her as a seamstress.Over the next few days, Maeve starts to realize that she has developed some special powers. Then she meets a man named Otis, who turns out to be a recruiter for Spellcrest Academy, a four year training academy for beings, not just humans, with magical powers. Otis wants to take Maeve there but Maeve will not go without her brother. Maeve ends up giving Finley some of her power so that he can go with her. But they cannot let anyone know that they are related. At the Academy, Maeve meets all sorts of interesting characters. My favorite is one of her roommates, Riselle, who is part angel 👼, wings and all. There are a lot of twists and turns in the storyline. It is a very enjoyable read. Don't want to give anything away but if you enjoyed reading the Harry Potter series, you will enjoy this.I originally got a free ARC of this book to read and give an honest review but I had trouble with the book and ended up buying the ebook to finish reading the book. And I am very glad I did. This is a very enjoyable book and I love most of the characters, except the spoiled whiney brat Finley. He did not grow on me. He just irritated me. Like a real brother.II cannot wait to read the next book.

A bit too much angst for me
The premise of this book is kind of interesting, and it is well written, and the brother-sister relationship is very well done - I actually got the real impression of siblings. Unfortunately, there were too many events that were totally implausible and somewhat forced. Just a bit more backstory would’ve been helpful.

Yet another annoying Maeve
I generally liked the plot and this book and every character in it but Maeve herself and her selfish little brother Finley. I find the conflict/battle of this book to be very interesting, and would really like to know how it would end!I don’t necessarily like the ending, though, as I feel it was too much of a cliffhanger, and it ended too abruptly. There was no conclusion, it was just BAM! The end. There were moments where I appreciated Maeve’s sarcasm and humor, but she mostly comes off as overly arrogant and, frankly, stupid to me. I could understand that she gets worried about her brother, but come on, have some boundaries. And then there’s the ending scene; she really has the nerves to challenge Trish, who lives with Ben and has been by his side while Maeve has been abandoning him? Talking about an entitled brat. She reminds me of the Maeve from Nightworld Academy, and gosh how I hated that character. There must be something about this name.I thought I would like Finley, and I did in the beginning, until he turned so selfish and greedy for power. Again, arrogant and dumb, just like his sister.Poor Devon, he wanted nothing but the best for Maeve once he fell in love with her, but look where it got him. Abandoned. Resented.I have pre-ordered Crestfallen (Book 2), mainly because of Devon and the war. I do hope that Maeve would be able to gather all her magic back, or better yet, gain an even more amplified version of it. I also hope that poor Devon won’t stay heartbroken for long, and that Maeve would choose to forgive him and develop a deeper relationship that they both deserve. As much as I despise her personality, I still find her adorable whenever she’s with Devon (on their good terms, of course). I adore all her friends, too. They’re innocent and supportive, simply admirable friends.I’m extra appreciative that the spelling and grammatical errors are really minimal in this book. It allowed a smooth, pleasant read. Although I saw ‘Processor Winsor’ instead of ‘Professor Winsor,’ I still found it quite funny and honest. It’s a full length novel after all. People, especially editors, can get tired.Anyway, it was a really good read and I finished it in a few hours and one setting. I was deeply engrossed in this story and am definitely looking forward to Crestfallen in July!

Cliffhanger ending
I think authors do a huge disservice to readers when they don't warn of cliffhangers. I will usually quit a series of I don't know in advance. I read to many books, then forget all the details by the time the next book is finally out. If I know, I wait until series completed, then read it through.Interesting world building and characters. Magee is strong and loyal, but a hot head. I liked her. Her brother Finley is an ungrateful brat, but I feel bad for the terrible luck he has had in life.Maeve has incredible power thrust upon her and her whole life turns upside down. She is forced to accept placement at spellcraft academy and figures out a way to drag her brother along for the ride. New friends are made, bonds broken, and real danger is coming down on the school. Looking forward to the series, once all of the books are out.
