It is a safety measure. I had to reread the instructions because I was making little mistakes also. The safety measures work and ultimately will protect you from yourself. Only steamed 10 pieces and now it just SPITS WATER EVERYWHERE, 4 mos. out of 1-yr. warranty! *by A***R on April 25, 2025* I THOUGHT I had found a solid product when I bought this steamer, but I was sorely mistaken! It functioned well initially, quickly heats up, and steams clothes easily. I used it to steam, maybe 10 pieces of clothing since I bought it in Jan. 2024. Now, four months out of warranty, it's completely useless as it just SPITS hot water out everywhere, down the handle, EVERYWHERE! (See attached video. Excuse the sound of Bluey playing in the background but you'll have no problem seeing and hearing the issue.) Mind you, I took excellent care of it, only using distilled water, emptying it and drying it when done, carefully packaging it back into the box when done. But suddenly, it just spits out water after using it about 10 times! Reading other's one-star reviews (now), many others have had this experience. Totally a waste of $60+ and more useless crap to fill up a landfill, because they don't make stuff built to last much longer than the 1-year warranty these days.
