AmiguruME: Make Cute Crochet People

I would recommend this book, but...
When I purchased this book, I was a little skeptical as to whether I would be able to make a doll that resembles a person. I made this first doll for a friend of mine for her birthday and she loved it! My only wish is that there would be more body types to choose from. When you're trying to make a doll of someone who is bootylicious/curvy, you can only make them look very slim and it takes away from how much the doll looks like them. It would also be great for there to be a pattern for expecting moms and babies. I know it's difficult to fit every type of person in one book, but adding various body sizes would be easy (I think). It would also be great to have patterns for people who are differently abled and utilize wheelchairs, walkers, etc. But this book is a great addition to your crochet book collection, and who wouldn't love a custom doll of their own?

Instructions are written in English! Very easy to follow, but beware of the difficulty level
You need to be more than a beginner to use this book, however. I have been crocheting for MANY more years than I'd care to admit, so the instructions were easy for me to follow, but if you're just beginning, I suggest you practice making something else with YouTube videos or a live teacher before attempting one of these projects (dolls). And be sure to get stitch markers to keep track of which round you're on! The right supplies (she suggests what you will need) are very important. This is unlike most crochet, except doilies, that go around and around and around. This is not rows (except for the clothing). Still, it's fun and it goes quickly. The dolls turn out very cute and it's fun to design your own doll. I made one to look like my daughter. I must say, with the right eyes (I used embroidered eyes I bought on Etsy.com), shaping the mouth just right, and the right yarn for her rather short hair, it looks remarkably like her! I haven't finished the clothing yet and I hope I remember to post a picture of the doll when she's finished to give you an idea of what to expect.

Fantastic Book!
So I've only been crocheting since the end of January 2021, but I jumped right into amigurumis. I've made a couple of Allison Hoffman's patterns (Bernie and Grogu) before. I wanted to make a Bolivian Chola and this book was perfect for me to pick what I needed to make it happen. The only thing I had to wing was the hat. I still have a lot to learn, so please don't let me work be reflection on the book, because it's super easy to follow and has a ton of options, to create your own custom people. Next I'm going to make a Michael Jordan for my husband.

Great book, easy to follow, so fun
This book is charming, easy to follow and fun. There are so many ways to customize your doll, so you can really get a close resemblance to your human. I love the "choose your own adventure" style of the book. There are several options with each body part and even a few add on patterns, like clothes and accessories. The patterns are simple and easy to follow - but be warned that there are no pictures showing the process, only pictures of completed dolls. This wasn't an issue for me as the patterns were all pretty simple, but I did wish there were a few shots of how to do the hair. I don't think you need to be very skilled at crochet to use this book, since you mostly use just a basic single crochet stitch and the others are clearly described. I loved this book and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to make a unique gift!

Buy. This. Book
Allison is an amigurumi GODDESS. Sheβs amazing. Sheβs been my COVID savior. Her patterns are easy to follow and they are incredibly fun. Sheβs also a genuinely good person with a huge heart. Iβve purchased many patterns from her as well as her personally curated small women owned business package (fabulous). Buy this book and fall in love with Allison Hoffman.

Great book for the most part
Let's start with: I crochet a lot of amigurumi so I am used to reading patterns. For the most part I am very happy with this book. The concept is wonderful.I only have a few minor complaints...The add-on hood pattern that it says on page 59 is included in the book is not. Since my husband wears them ALL the time, that was kind of a bummer and I will have to figure out on my own how to make one. Also, she shows a few hair styles but a couple 'in progress' photos would be helpful...although I am not wild about her examples of short hair and made up my own lolIt was also very vague on how to attach the lower body to the upper body (or maybe I just didn't understand it) but overall, I was able to complete a little self-portrait that I like so I am happy with this book....for the most part.

Good but flawed - not for beginners
Overall this is a nice book, I have, however, found inconsistencies in the patterns.-This book is not for beginner crocheters. There are NO instructional photos as you'd normally get in amigurumi patterns purchased in PDF form independent designers. Even though I consider myself an intermediate to advanced crocheter I still find myself having to work some things out.A few pattern inconsistencies I've found (that should be really addressed by the author and publisher);- The bootcut trousers end in 10 stitches. The basic shoes are worked into 9 stitches but you have 10 from the bootcut trousers. So you have to inv. decrease and that's not in the pattern.-For a collar shirt there is an instruction to invdec around, but the number of stiches remains the same as before you invdec. In order for it to work out you have to SC around. All in all you can make cute dolls but this is definitely for people who are willing to tweak a pattern and not take it as the ultimate truth.

A Wonderful, Inspiring Resource Book
Not a conventional book of patterns, but a wonderful resource book for the adventurous crocheter who wants to create their own unique amigurumi personalities. The front of the book says 'Make Cute Crochet People' and I wonder if should say 'A wonderful resource to customize your own crochet people'.The book gives the How To for each stage of the doll making process, so that everyone can make their own customized characters, but it does not contain specific patterns for individual characters. So,if you wanted a pattern book that shows you step-by-step how to make Mr.T or Tina Turner, for example, as shown on the front cover, then you may be disappointed. The book is divided into sections for heads of different size and shapes; bodies; clothes embroidered faces etc. with a lovely introduction at the beginning that explains the designer, Allison Hoffman's journey into crochet. There is also a resources section at the back and useful tips about stuffing etc. Though I would also add that cloth figure stuffing forks should be included as a useful tool and I couldn't locate the information about where exactly to purchase the doll safety eyes she recommends (though I found some online).I'm also learning some great new techniques. So, I adore this book and am really excited about making my own characters.

Not what I expected but ok
I expected there to be instructions on how to tweak the pattern for different people. But basically there are just set patterns- narrow, long face or short, round face- so if you want a different face shape, you will need to either mould it with the stuffing or write your own pattern. Also, I wanted all the clothes to be removable but this book caters for the clothes staying on and as such are crocheted into their body. I got round this by just using one colour but now have to make my own patterns up for all the other clothes as there isn't enough in the book (only like a blazer). Some good inspiration but when I completed a doll with a smaller hook than suggested, it actually came out a bit bigger than I'd wanted so I will end up making my own patterns instead. Also, as I wanted to crochet a couple standing next to each other with big differences in height, it would look silly when they will come out both the same height pretty much. I would recommend if you have no prior knowledge of crochet as it's very easy and has instructions for all the stitches, and I don't regret buying it as there are some good pictures of the people which always gives inspiration. I especially like the idea of using little beads and craft wire to make jewellery!x

Mary Poppins
My granddaughter got picked to play Mary Poppins in her school play, this meant I had to make her a toy version, as I had with previous grandchildren for their plays. Unable to find a pattern, I found a suggestion online that this book would be helpful. It has different patterns to invent your own version of anyone you wish. Using this book I was able to make a doll and most of her clothes. It was fun picking out which bits would work and I was really pleased with the finished doll. The only thing I didn't like was the dolls neck, which is very small and needs to strengthened with dowel, which I didn't use, as the doll is for a child.

100% Worth It
An amazing book, absolutely worth the money. The instructions are clear and generally easy to follow, including detailed explanations of the different stitches used. Since the patterns show you how to make different components of figures rather than specific people, there's literally endless possibilities. Allison also provides some options for alterations or variations in the patterns, and I also found it easy to adapt the patterns and experiment, like turning a cardigan into a v-neck jumper or combining the blazer and skirt patterns to make a graduation robe. One tiny issue I found was that one pattern said there was a hood that could be added on, but I couldn't find the instructions any where in the book. This was unfortunately left out, but a quick google search led me straight to a pdf download of the missing pattern. All in all, a wonderful purchase for an increasingly avid crocheter and a newcomer to amigurumi :)
