Convenient onion slush, gives nice results easily
This onion mush works well as a filler, for thickening up the texture of a tomato sauce or a curry. It’s one of those ingredients that looks and smells quite unappealing individually- it looks a lot like baby food to be frank, and the colour’s not lovely. But once you’ve mixed it in, for the most part it’s only positive results that come out. Or, depending on your recipe, barely any noticeable difference at all. It’s very slushy, and as such it’s very easy to use, though personally I was hoping that it wouldn’t be quite as thoroughly mushed and that at least a little of the crunch of a raw onion might remain, at least in tiny pieces, but no. If this product were a peanut butter, it would be a smooth one not a crunchy one.Another reviewer has said that that this onion paste is good for “5 or 6 meals”, but for us, it’s far more than that. We’ve found we only need a fairly small amount, substantially less than fifty percent of the quantity of the sauce, to really get the effect of it and to give cooking just a hint of that ‘restaurant feel’. But that will also depend quite a lot on what’s already in the tomato sauce or pasta sauce that you’re adding it to, and what sort of texture and runniness you’re aiming for.Storage-wise, the plastic tub is rather basic and certainly a bit ugly, and you’ll definitely want to consider clingfilm if you’re planning to store it in your fridge, as there is a chance the onion smell is going to creep out and affect any fresh fruit or veg you’ve already got in there. But considering the price for the quantity (eight quid for a one kilo jar), I’m not going to begrudge too much the slightly cheap plastic packaging. It’s got an airtight seal when it arrives.Looks aren’t everything, and as a convenient cooking ingredient that will save you from a whole bunch of onion-tears, I’m pleased to have this as an option.

perfect for curries
used this to make a pathia and it was perfect. Froze the rest into large ice cube trays and use instead of an onion when making my other curries. Will be buying again for sure.

Not what I expected
Used it in cooking but it is less useful than I expected and it is difficult for me to judge how much to use.

Brilliant
I didn't even know something like this exists but it now means that I don't need to spend ages chopping up onions and crying my eyes out whenever I need to add some onion to a dish. I simply add a bit of this paste which is very reasonably priced! Considering it's 1KG of very dense onion paste, this is well worth the price and much easier than buying onions, unless you're looking to caramelise them. Would recommend!

Onions without tears - a real flavour enhancer
I make a lot of curries and I dislike chopping onions as they make me cry, but now that I have discovered onion paste, there are no more tears!I wasn’t sure how much to add to my curry for two people so I went with three large tablespoons. It tastes like pureed pickled onion out of the jar so I knew it wouldn’t ruin my meal. It didn’t ruin it at all, it enhanced it and transformed my curry into a much tastier meal. The jar has a very long expiry date on it (of almost 3 years) and it has a seal over the top of the jar beneath the lid. It recommends refrigerating once opened but it doesn’t state how long you can use it once you remove the seal. I think this jar will last me for 10-12 curries. The 1kg jar is huge and I actually thought it was worth £7.99 (at the time of review) until I peeled off the label and found ‘£1.99’ printed beneath it.If you cook a lot with onions then this onion paste is well worth trying. It’s not as smelly as cutting or cooking onions and it doesn’t make you cry.

Convenient
This was my first time using onion paste in cooking, so getting to grips with how much to use in pasta sauces was a struggle - my conclusion is I probably use too much onion in my food. This tub will probably last 1 to 2 weeks in my household and is good for 5 or 6 meals. The tub is a screw top but not quite air tight, although it has seal on it when it arrives. I’ve been keeping mine in the fridge with an extra layer of cling film under the lid to stop smells seeping out.Overall though, the flavour is good and it saves endless chopping trying to get the onion small enough for my son to eat it!
