The Emperor's Exile (Eagles of the Empire 19): The thrilling Sunday Times bestseller

Great Book for 2021
This book is somewhat ironic because this is 2021. While Macro and his wife Petronella move to Britannia, Cato is left in Rome to deal with the fallout of the first failed invasion of Armenia. Then he gets orders to escort one of Nero's former mistresses to Sardinia where there is an epidemic and an insurrection. Does anyone else beside me see the irony? A civil unrest, a pestilence, and a series of 3-4 morally and politically weak rulers? While Scarrow does not use allegory, he does border a little on alternate history. The "real" Claudia Acte did survive well past Nero while the "literary" Claudia Acte experiences a different fate. No spoilers here so you will have to find out what happens to her.

About Cato in Sardinia...
I read many of the books in the Cato/Macro series, and must agree with some of the other reviewers who noted that this volume is not among the author's best. This is actually a short work made to appear longer by the addition of a chapter from the author's latest book. Even so, the story itself seemed padded with too many internal monologues, inane chit-chat, etc.Notwithstanding the above, the four star rating is well deserved as there is an interesting story set in a little known province of the Roman Empire, the problem facing the protagonist is complex, and there are enough unexpected turns to hold the reader's attention. This book is not a page turner, but it is a good read thanks to the author's literary style. The ending is much too abrupt and even improbable, but it sets the stage well for the next book in the series which I am sure that will be well received by the many Scarrow readers and enthusiasts.

Worried about losing an old friend
Not long into the beginning chapter, I realized that our main protagonist, Cato, would be embarking on a new adventure missing an element that was always constant in the first 18 books.I was pleasantly surprised on how well the author adapted to this new environment.Keep hitting those f****** home-runs Simon Scarrow!

Hard to put down
Simon Scarrow takes you back in time to the heart of the Roman Empire. The saga of Prefect Cato continues as he is tasked with putting down brigands in Sardinia as a plague threatens to sweep through the island. Great read that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

Great book but some virtue signaling
This is a great book, but I do think it was written during COVID-19 quarantine. It focuses a lot on illness, and the characters use COVID protocols as if they had always been obvious to everyone dating back to Rome. I was shocked that everyone wasn't wearing masks and talking about how everyone in the empire is "in this together."

The Emperors Exile
Nero orders Cato to restore order to Sardinia to rid the island of brigrands and pestilence alike. He escorts the Emperors concubine to exile on the island and for the very first time he has to face peril without Macro's sword and shield at his side.

Superb, as usual
Macro and Cato continue to survive in the rough and dangerous times of Ancient Rome. Is there a better series about Roman legions? I don't think so.

Another good tale from Rome
While the Cato and Macro series has been an outstanding journey this book was lacking. Appolinus was an interesting character but without Macro and his insights it was a just ok. Good book but not up to the level of the rest of series.

The story is about Cato and Macro
Some people have given this a less than five rating, often stating there's to little fighting. Ultimately this is the story of two good friends Cato and Macro. There's has been plenty of fighting in previous books and still some in this one. But this series is much more than just Romans fighting barbarians. I've found this latest in the series to be just as interesting. Macro has gone to Britannia to retire with his loved one, the year is 57 C.E., just three or so years to the British rebellion under Queen Boudicea. Our heroes have already met this distinguished person in an earlier volume. My thinking is perhaps the series will come to an end with one eyed Cato going to Britannia to meet Macro just before the rebellion and the Battle of Watling Street. Just a guess on my part, but I look forward to further books in the series.

A great read
A great way to learn of Roman history through the eyes of well drawn and believable characters who draw you into their world.

New and interesting characters
A good read perhaps not so exciting as those earlier in the series

Un poco flojo
Es el que menos me ha gustado de todos los que he leído, la trama es bastante previsible y excesiva en algunos aspectos.
