Bleach, Vol. 49

The Lost Agent arc begins
Seventeen years after losing his Soul Reaper powers, Ichigo is still getting used to life as a normal person with a part-time job and selling his services to various school clubs. Things change for him again however when Ichigo is approached by a mysterious man who has a very tempting offer for Ichigo. Meanwhile a mysterious new power is also beginning to move. The forty-ninth volume of the 'Bleach' manga sees the beginning of the relatively short Lost Agent arc that, while still relatively entertaining, isn't quite as good as some of the previous arcs of the following arc. The arc begins with Ichigo living a relatively normal life and it is quite interesting to see the new character designs for all the human characters. The volume also introduces some new characters in the form of the mysterious organisation Xcution and Ichigo's boss at his part time job, Ikumi Unagiya. There is some nice humour throughout the volume and although there is a little action in this volume as Ichigo beats up a few thugs, the volume is mostly setting things up for the coming arc.I wasn't much of a fan of this arc when I read it originally and while I still feel that it doesn't rate as one of the series best storylines (as there is a lot of wasted potential in the arc as a whole), I will admit that it has some interesting moments and it is by no means the worst part of the series either. Having said all this, I do feel this volume probably deserves a low four stars as it is a reasonably good setup, even if the arc itself doesn't live up to its promise.
