Will encryption work if this is used in a Chromebook?

Accepted Answer

The encryption happens entirely within the external disk.

As long as you unlock it before plugging it into the computer, the computer will see it as just another USB disk. It won't even know that the data on the physical storage within the disk are encrypted.

If you don't unlock it first, it won't even tell the computer that it IS a disk. The computer's USB controller will probably feed it power, which it uses to charge its internal battery, but from what I've seen the primary operating system (macOS, Linux/chrome/android, or even windows if you're into that kind of self-abuse) won't even be aware that a device is plugged into the port.

Would this be good for storing Bitcoin keys?

I use it to store my most secret items. It will definitely do the job for your Bitcoin keys, that is one of my closely guarded secrets also. The Aegis Secure Key 3 enables me to keep my secrets from the internet until I absolutely have to expose them. That’s why I have several different Aegis encrypted storage devices. They have served me well for the pass 8 years.

What happens if the drive is formatted? Will this effect the encryption capability?

However you choose to format the drive is independent of the encryption capability. The drive is encrypted in the thumb drive hardware/firmware independent of the drive formatting. Generally you set up your encryption key, set whatever additional features you want to set, and then you format the drive for MacOS, for NTFS, for exFAT, etc. based on your specific needs.
