How to Catch a Clover Thief

An Excellent Guide to Agrarian Security for Children!
Our kids are 8, 6, 4, and 4. The acclaim for this book is unanimous. ("Read it again! PLEEEASE?!?" On the plus side, the eight-year-old is a good reader now, and even the six-year-old can work his way through it!)Roy is worried. He's got this prime patch of clover that he can't seem to keep secure. Jarvis is full of suggestions, but may also be full of chicanery. (Our kids suspected him from the start, but they weren't sure.)Roy starts reading. And Roy starts learning lots of things from what he reads. But when he's reading, he kind of loses track of reality. (We've all been there. Speaking of losing track of reality, ask your kids what they think the dotted-line parts of the illustrations mean!) The clover patch suffers! But the knowledge Roy gains starts to converge in his mind. The pieces are moving. A showdown is coming. And the payoff will be sweet.(This review works best if you imagine the Hollywood movie trailers voice-over guy reading it. If you would please go back and read it again with that voice in your head, this reviewer would be grateful.)

A Favorite Author!!
Elise Parsley is a favorite author among my PreKindergarteners. They love her humor, her in your face attitude, and her crazy premises that her books are based on.

I’m a librarian on the lookout for great books about reading for understanding and how to choose a just right for reading level book. This book hits it out of the park on both counts!

Thanks Elise Parsley for another winner!
Another keeper from author Elise Parsley! Her illustrations and story are magical as you read about Roy, the wild boar, who only wants to enjoy his clover patch! Along comes Jarvis, the gopher, with his own ideas. Problem solving, the love and reading of books just add to the fun!!

Good examples of "not giving up" and creative problem solving.
The character are unusual as is the topic. The art work is enchanting and I loved the fact a main character carved his own canoe! That is a feat to be noticed by anyone anywhere!
