Q: Could you easily mod this to put cannon and working gunports as in the old pirate ships, or is the interior too narrow?

The interior has space. The vessel is a sail driven personal yacht. You would have to reduce or get rid of a minibar/two bed lower deck bedroom to make space. The mast blocks top access to the sleeping area (rear middle section) but the upper deck can open over the minibar if one creates a handle (set's cargo box in really well into the plate very softly set in place works for me) or use a bent wire to get that base plate up. The rear section is the galley but has windows that rear face on both sides of the rudder. More access is possible when the ship is in sections. The side to side range of fire would be reduced but the ports left without (no window insert), only frame and red flag would make the set's standard cannons point up due to their small wheels. My adult hands make adjusting anything the lower decks tough. If you do not build the desk like thing in the forward section, a small cargo hold is discovered. Lego set 31109 pirate ship build cannons might be what you are looking for. I would look into that set too given your question for ideas. I hope this helps.

Supply and demand plays a huge role in LEGO pricing. Plus it does not take much to push a popular LEGO set pricing up as a collectible. IDEAS sets also have relatively limited production runs. And LEGO is not immune to the logistics issues facing much of the toy industry, esp. since LEGO sets are primarily manufactured outside the US. That puts some sets in tight supply. Another factor is that this LEGO set is relatively large/heavy, and thus expensive to mail. Sellers need to cover that cost also, even after what Amazon passes thru to us as a S&H reimbursement from the buyer. If you find any Amazon seller with pricing at or near LEGO's MSRP, go for it. We cannot do that, and continue to operate.
