These things are awesome. I use a bar type magnetic stud finder to find the nails and then I pop these little guys right on the spot to mark the stud. Painters tape works too, but I really like these more. You can use these to find the nails in the studs as well, but they have a small surface area and I find it's better to use something else to do the finding and use these for the marking.

Many years ago I bought a gadget called a "Magic Stud Finder" that had magnet "targets" that you slide over a drywall wall and the magnets stick to any drywall nails or screws. It was so simple and worked great and then the company went out of business and discontinued it. This is the re-incarnation of that very simple and incredibly useful idea. The "holder" holds two "markers". You just sweep the holder over the wall until one of the magnets sticks, then you remove the marker and leave it stuck to the nail or screw, then add another marker to the holder and keep going. In no time at all you can easily mark every single stud in the wall for perfect placement for anything you want to hang. I usually mark a line of upper screws and lower screws and then the line between them shows the centerline of the stud. Perfect location every single time. No batteries, no flashing lights, just rare earth magnets.

I have a stud mark stud finder and it is great to have extra markers. I can locate 8 studs. Great for handrail installation without marking the wall with pencil. I recommend it.
