good emergency fire starter
I don't have a lot to say other than it works as expected. Matches or a lighter obviously work better though.

Survivor
Who wouldn't want to have a Magnesium Fire Starter in their survival kit at home? This has been added to my kit along with my LifeStraw.

Good magnesium block, poor striker.
The striker isn't the best and the ferro rod part of the block is also pretty pathetic. You will be able to start a fire with this, but you also won't be very happy throughout the process. My advice would be to get Red Rock's flint striker in addition to this magnesium block for just a few bucks extra and make your life a whole lot easier. I compared the two side-by-side and it's pretty clear that the built-in striker is just "better than nothing" - not great.I also personally prefer the idea of using natural "tinder sticks" (oily wood) vs magnesium as the wood is much easier to shave, better for my knife and burns longer. However, you can definitely put this fire starter in your pocket much more easily than a stick of wood.

Cheap and easy to use fire starter
Pretty easy to use, started multiple fires while camping the weekend after I got it. The chain part of it makes it a bit annoying to use in tight spots, so removing that while using it may be needed.

The little saw blade helps create great sparks.
Since the rod is glued to a solid piece of metal you can strike it with confidence without having to worry about breaking it. The little saw blade helps create great sparks.
