Q: How do attach this to a tree without harming the tree?

I use a silicone glue that stretches as the tree bark grows. Eventually I imagine it will fall off the tree after many many years. This particular piece I glued to a large clay pot, but I have others attached to trees.

Q: can you drill through this to attach to a tree?

No. This will crack if drilled through and probably end up splitting. My suggestion is to cut out the hole in the tree for it.
