Old Grohe thermostatic cartridge
Poor design but if you have the old Grohe valve that uses this in your wall then you have no other choice. These will usually lock up when they get to the end of their service lives and not let the user turn the temperature knob anymore. Quite large and heavy for a cartridge but mostly brass with some stainless steel. The old one is definitely worth a few bucks in brass scrap probably weighing in at 4 lbs or so.Btw, good luck getting the knob off. You need to unscrew the large brass screw under the knob cap and then pull real hard and smack the knob with something hard like a piece of wood or the handle of some large pliers to dislodge it. After that it will expose this monstrosity. Turn off the service stops with a metric allen wrench or turn off the water before taking a large pipe wrench to this thing to unscrew it from the valve housing.

Does these come off the line this way? Has a lot of marks on it, but doesn't look used. What is the condition of this?
