Q: can you use it without oil

I'm sure you could, but why? That's what air poppers are for. Air popped popcorn has little flavor. Viatek is for small batches of popcorn. It controls your portions, which is key to effective weight loss and maintenance. For one batch, I use 5 grams of oil (40 calories) and 35 grams of popping corn (105 calories). The total of 145 calories is less than most snacks. Corn popped in a small amount of oil simply tastes better and is more satisfying. The Viatek does three things: It helps you control the portion of popcorn, enables you to eliminate all the unnecessary fillers in most microwave popcorn, and finally, it's also less expensive than microwave popcorn bags. These are the reasons to buy the Viatek. I've been using it regularly for months now, and I still love it.

Q: Is this dishwasher safe and does not need oil?

Yes, this popcorn maker can be washed in the top rack of the dishwasher. Using oil is optional but if you do it only calls for 1 tsp. oil. This is a much smaller popcorn popper than I expected when I ordered it. It calls for 1/4 cup popcorn but that is too much for mine. It is great for one serving though.

Q: what is the base made out of?

Slippery red plastic. Also, I was surprised to discover that there are two small popcorn makers in the box instead of one larger one. And you really have to watch it closely so that it doesn't burn. All that said, I like it. Once I got used to it I found that it works well.
