Amazing Collection, but poorly bound
Nikos Kazantzakis was one of the most profound writers of the 20th century, and this selection of his letters is worthy of his stature. Each letter is annotated by the editor with insightful and informative notes that provide context and links to the works and thinking of Kazantzakis. The contents deserve 5 stars without any hesitation, and Peter Bien is one of the most important translators and interpreters of Kazantzakis. THE PROBLEM? The binding is the worst that one can imagine, and it came as a shock from such a prestigious publisher as Princeton. The glue binding is extremely thin and broke apart in several places upon my initial opening and skimming through the book. Immediately, the book is ready to come apart in two places where the binding broke. This is unacceptable for such an expensive and prestigious book. And I should say that I bought a new copy from Amazon.com, not a copy from a secondary seller. I can't bring myself to give this book a lower rating, even though the production of the book deserves 1 star. Princeton has an e-Book version available and I'm hoping that Amazon will make it available on Kindle. I will return the hardcover copy and not request a replacement, as I doubt a replacement copy will be any better. Princeton chose to bind this expensive book in a very cheap way, and it's the first time I've ever had reason to complain about the quality of a Princeton publication. Very disappointed.
