History through the lens of comics, perfectly executed.
This is such a well written and incredibly researched book. Many comic book fans are very aware of the impact Seduction of the Innocent had on the comic book industry and this book does a wonderful job of diving so much deeper into providing not just the historical context that built up to the iconic senate meetings with EC comics and others, but also the larger impact and role comics played in US and global history in their Golden Age.This book flows so well, taking the reader from one significant historical moment into the next, all through the lens of comics! It's a perfect combination of comics and history that appeals both to the 13 year old in me that fell in love with "funny books" and the 40 year old I am that yearns to defend and justify my interest in and significance of those same "funny books."It has taken my understanding beyond the generalized martyrdom of EC comics and its role as a red herring as presented in Seduction of the Innocent and pulled me into an ocean of historical and cultural significance that comics have played in not just influencing, but also capturing, our evolution as a nation and as people. However, after reading certain portions and comparing it to current events, I'm starting to have my doubts about how much we've really changed, if at all...it's certainly a twist worthy of those found in the same comics the author presents to us in this book.
