Review: Great for energy, feeling less cold, and extreme fatigue! - the crazy thing is that this helped so much with energy, and feeling less cold and fatigued but my ferritin did not move. my ferritin was still a 6 while taking this mid-summer last year and when I took my blood test in January this year, it was still a 6 :( it did help my serum iron rise from 30 to 39. my doctor thinks it's because the elemental iron is too low for me (i'm very iron deficient) but I think this is perfect for maintenance once ferritin rises! this brand was super gentle on my stomach as well and i took it every other day (make sure not to consume dairy, tea, fiber, PPIs, calcium/zinc, or magnesium within 2+ hours of taking this). iron is such a complex mineral and certain forms of iron work in some people while not working for others.

**Q: Why is Calcium in this?  I’ve always been told to avoid calcium and iron together.**
A: Vitamin C helps the absorption of iron, however ascorbic acid is not stable with the Optiferin form so Pure Encapsulations uses calcium ascorbate. The amount of calcium is not enough to interfere with absorption.

**Q: Is this product food based?**
A: Pure Encapsulations Optiferin-C contains mineral iron from iron ore bound to synthetic glycine. The calcium ascorbate is derived from calcium from mineral ore and ascorbic acid from corn dextrose fermentation.

**Q: Is this iron chelated?**
A: Says, "Iron (as iron bis-glycinate) 28mg. 156% daily per 1 capsule.

**Q: What is in the calcium ascorbate blend? I read in a different question that the amount of calcium is so small it wont interfere with the iron.**
A: Pure Encapsulations OptiFerrin-C contains calcium ascorbate sourced from calcium from earthen ore and ascorbic acid from corn dextrose fermentation.  The amount of calcium is not enough to interfere with absorption.

I've needed to take iron supplements as long as I can remember. Regular iron pills resulted in constipation and severe stomach cramps. Gentle iron made me vomit. I took a slow release that I cut in half and was able to tolerate it. My iron levels were finally normal, but those pills caused so much burping, which might not sound that bad. Try to imagine so much burping that it was that bad. This OptiFerin-C has been amazing for me! I have no side effects and my iron levels are good. My only regret is that I didn't find it sooner. I also wish that the bottle came in a higher pill count.
