Which is the strongest that will wake me up?

It is a misconception that darker roasts have more caffeine. It is actually quite the opposite. The lighter the roast, the more caffeine it contains, which is why a lot of light roasts are called "breakfast blends". Some believe that the longer roasting process removes the caffeine from the dark roast beans, while some will argue that it actually has to do with the density of the beans (dark roasted beans are somewhat less dense than lightly roasted beans, therefore having less caffeine by weight). Either way, a light or medium roast is your best bet. Bold/dark taste does not equal high caffeine content.

I'm not quite sure about what low acid means to you; however, I can say that this coffee is by far the best we have ever had! Way better than Starbucks, Seattle's Best, and some of the other dark French roast that we have enjoyed in the past. Bold roast coffee beans tend to be more oily which makes them more fragrant and gives a more robust coffee flavor which is what my husband and I enjoy. It doesn't taste acid-y to us. So, not sure if this helpful or not.

I ordered whole bean. Why did it come ground?

I have been receiving Kicking Horse whole bean coffee from Amazon for at least two years. In all of that time, all deliveries have been as ordered - whole bean. It is possible to order ground Kicking Horse coffee. Perhaps it was ordered incorrectly. (Check your Amazon order history. ) Otherwise, I can only surmise that it was a rare order fulfillment mistake.
