To use a standard battery, the High Tech Pet collar would need a wire stretched between the two halves of the collar module. This would be a VERY easy failure point and difficult to water proof. The sticker on the battery has metal in it that "moves" the +/- to the same side of the battery so it touches the power connections on the control board. It's the cheaper and more robust solution, because I'm sure people would be more upset if the whole collar failed ($60). They adhere the adaptor with a very fine adhesive tape.
