Don Zeck C8 Lens Cap for Canon 500mm f/4.0 USM IS Lens

I was becoming frustrated with the stock 'leather' cap of the Canon 500 f4 IS lens. It was particularly troublesome when used over a lens coat which I think provides an element of protection to the lens. The cap did not fit over the lens coat and tended to roll it back no matter how carefully applied. The stock cap is also bulky without an easy way to store it while using the lens. After reading several reviews of the DZ lens cap it seemed worthwhile to give it a shot. The DZ cap is solid yet light. The design is quite clever making it very simple to put on and take off. It makes a surprisingly tight seal with the lens. You can put it on the lens even with the lens hood attached though I would be careful while placing it blindly. The only question I have is the durability of the o-rings used to hold the cap in place. I have not seen negative comments on the web but would assume the o-ring material will eventually degrade and will require replacement (which should be simple and inexpensive). I find it convenient to hang the DZ cap from the counterweight hook under my tripod while using the lens. Doesn't get lost that way either. The stock cap is now relagated to the storage bin where it will likely never get used.

OK it's just a lens cap. But it's much more practical than the clumsy "boot" or "sock" [I don't know what else to call it] that Canon ships with the lens, even if the OEM part is leather. If it were US $ 25 cheaper I'd say it was a bargain.

I have no idea why Canon didn't make, or buy this design to ship these len caps with there super tele's. For the price, the cap is very cheap feeling. Probably 2 dollars in parts.

I got this to avoid the struggle I always have with the Canon soft cover. The Don Zeck cap is an interesting substitute. It is engineered so that a series of smaller discs attached to a larger disc actually hold it to the lens hood. This works well most of the time, although I have had it slip off a few times, which makes me worry about the front element of the lens.Where this really shines is when I need to get the lens engaged quickly for wildlife shots that won't wait around. When those opportunities happen, this cap is Gold.

This lens cap was recommended to me by another photographer that I happened to meet while photographing birds. He was very positive in his review and I decided to get one for my Canon 500mm. This is a fantastic lens cap for big glass protection and should be a standard for all users of these types of lenses.

Well built lens cover so much more convenient then canons cover for my 500mm F4.
