世界恐慌の時代のアメリカ。母親を亡くして孤児院にいたBudは、10歳の時に裕福な里親に引き取られるが、初日に酷い目に合わされ、その家を飛び出す。多すぎる孤児の数にパンク状態の孤児院には帰りたくないBudは、母親が大切にしていたバンドのチラシに載っている、父親と思われる人を探すことを決心し、母親の思い出の詰まった古いスーツケースを片手に、ひとり歩き出す。恐慌と人種差別の中で生きる厳しいはずの状況にもかかわらず、 Budも、Budが出会う人たちも、全然悲壮感はなくて、タフで、希望があって、読んでてすごく楽しいです。
