We have had our system for years now, have replaced the PF-2 (fluoride & other contaminants) twice now, but the black filters can last a very long time - just need to be cleaned periodically with a 3-M pad. It's the best system on the market, least expensive to purchase and least expensive to operate, and can be used outside (camping, emergency water needs, etc.). Nothing better available; we very highly recommend it.

How do you know when the filters need replacing?

Please do a red food coloring test by putting in 1 tsp per gallon in the top chamber.  When it passes through the filters, the water should be clear.  If it is not, please contact the dealer you purchased from.  The manufacturer is called New Millenium Concepts and does not sell Berkeys to the public, they only sell through their dealers.

Ive read many places that purifying water removes vital minerals, is this unit just for emergency water filtration?

I'm not a mineral expert, but I can tell you that we use or Berkey every day and for all our drinking water needs. Before, we would order those big bottles and lug them up our steps. No more. The water from our tap tastes heavily chlorined but when it comes out filtered through our Berkey - it tastes chemical free and delicious. I can't say if any minerals are being filtered out - but I surely don't want to drink what's coming our of our tap water - and we live in an area where the tap water is considered very good - just not nearly as good as what we get from the Berkey. We're getting the smaller unit for our RV too. Sorry if this reads like a commercial - but we love our Berkey.
