Do you just hold the sandpaper on? Or how does it attach?

Depending on the sandpaper, you can either hold it on or if you have sticky side sandpaper just slap it on there

What size (LxW) sandpaper do these sanding blocks use?

I use Dura Gold sticky back sand paper. It is a 2 3/4 " roll that will stick to the block. This is great for the curved areas of the block.

I'm sanding an antique brass lamp that has several very small vertical grooves about 1/8" deep over 5' of round surface. Would these get the grooves?

Yes, but everything depends on your choice of sandpaper in. Too large of a grit can ruin a piece fast.

These came with sample sandpaper, but the grit isn't marked. How do I know what grit each of the samples are?

It is marked by the red dots on the card in the package, 180, 120, and 80.
