the block is made of plaster but if your child has asthma I recommend that you do not buy it because it gives off dust or buy a mask to disarm it

You can take it apart and put it back together. I learned the hard way when I messed up a few pieces and had to fix it. Obviously, once you have chiseled away at the bones, the debris is basically trash.
