Great filter material for many uses and large enough to cut to size
Beautiful! I was able to cut to size with scissors without issues. I use this for a water bottle on my bicycle so that the water doesn't splash out. The water bottle is made such that the rider can drink while in riding position. This acts as a replacement for the filter that was old and came apart after 20 years. I don't really use this as a filter, but as a water retainer for the water bottle so that it keeps the water in. This works as awesome as what was there originally.

Work great for my keeping my sump's return pump clean
Someone mentioned a residue on the foam and they're correct. I'm guessing something to keep the foam from deteriorating during storage. Whatever it is, it rinses clean and has no detrimental affect on my saltwater fish. I've ordered quite a few of these now. I change them out every few days to a week and put a bunch in the washer every couple of months. No more constant rinsing and cleaning. Work great for my keeping my sump's return pump clean.

Strong and sturdy material...perfect hole size
I use this inside my filters since I have gone carbon-free and I also use this for sponge filters. This is a great product. It's tough and durable and grabs the goo. To clean just squeeze out a couple of times in old aquarium water to keep the good bacteria alive.

Filter contaminants and dimensions variances
So as with BillMan review, I also could smell a chemical smell on the sponges when taken out of the package. I rinsed it under tap water and put it in my tank. I did not see the same reactions that BillMan did when it comes to bubbles but about 2-3 hours after I put the sponge in my tank it became distinctly cloudy. I noticed that my two 3 inch feeder goldfish started showing signs of distress and a snail that did not show any signs of distress yet. I decided to let situation play out. I did a pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate test and found that all of them where normal, if anything the pH may have been about .5 higher but with the API test kit I cannot get much more accurate.About 24 hours later, I found my snail went to the corner of the tank with the least amount of flow and really looked like he was a goner with his shell partly open and no movement.Due to work about 48 hours after introducing the filter. I was able to do a water change. The water was still about as cloudy as it was when sponge was put in, my two fish were eating but did not seem happy, and snail seemed dead. I did a quick test of the water and ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate where as to be expected and pH was definitely about 1.0 higher than normal. I started a water change and found out after a sixth of water was out of my tank that my apartment had some plumbing issues and my tap water was nasty brown so I stopped doing the water change and used all the bottled drinking water I had in the house to fill back up my tank.Well as soon as I started up the pump again I could see that the cloudiness was distinctly less. Then about two hours after my snail came back to life and started doing his thing again and my fish seemed to be doing just fine.In conclusion, I am a total beginner with aquariums. I wanted to give a narrative of how everything played out so those more experienced than me can conclude what happen. My speculation is that these sponges do have something on them that was introduced into the tank and by me doing a water change with bottled drinking water, that has a lower pH than even my tap water, was able to lower the pH to a level that was more comfortable for my tank’s inhabitants. I also would like to note that the two reviewers, both me and BillMan, which had this issue have freshwater aquariums. So that may have been a factor; I don’t understand enough about saltwater setups to speculate what the difference would be.Lastly I would recommend that when you use these filters that you not only rinse them but also let them soak in water from you tank in a separate container until you can identify that it is no longer making the water cloudy and that all the contaminates are gone.

These are great! They are much better than the blue type ...
These are great! They are much better than the blue type filters you can buy at the store. They seem to pick up a lot more than the regular filters. I also love that these can be rinsed and put back in the tank. When I do a water change in my tank I rinse them out with warm water until the water runs clear.
