Another Very Good Book in the Series
"Captain's Fury" is the 4th book in Butcher's "Codex Alera" series. As with the other books in this series (and with his "Dresden Files" series, too), it's a very good book that's very well written and is very engrossing. It picks up about two years after the previous book and continues with Tavi's development (and, by now, we all know where it's going). My only nit with the book is that two of the three story-lines involve a bit more "slogging through the woods" than I'd like. It's not a big problem, but it's enough to make the book not quite as good as the previous one. So, I'm rating this book at a Very Good 4 stars out of 5.The books in Jim Butcher's "Codex Alera" series are:1. Furies of Calderon (Codex Alera) 2. Academ's Fury (Codex Alera) 3. Cursor's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 3) 4. Captain's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 4) 5. Princeps' Fury (Codex Alera) 6. First Lord's Fury (Codex Alera)

Excellent 4th part to the series.
I really enjoy this series. Jim Butcher is an author I love to read and I originally got hooked on his Dresden Files series. I'm currently anxiously awaiting the next release from both series at the end of 2008.The Codex Alera is a story line that, while not as intricately woven as George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire (or is it Fire and Ice? I forget), it is still very, very entertaining. We're not reading Aristotle here, but I never did enjoy reading him in the first place. Some might say it's predictable, but there are some good twists here and there and the series is going in the direction I really want it to go. If Butcher did something strange and killed off half of the cast to be unpredictable, I'd be upset.I recommend this book and this series to all those that enjoy the Dresden Files, Orson Scott Card, George R.R. Martin, etc.Again, it's a highly enjoyable read and I really can't wait to get the next book.

Oh, so very good!
Fantastic story! Loving this whole series. So many intricate details woven together into a beautiful tapestry. Pretty soon, I will have read everything Jim Butcher has published. Then what will I do?

Codex Alera series better than The Dresden Files
Jim Butcher does an awesome job with this book as with all of the others in the series.Book 1 started with Tavi at approximately age 12, and now he's approximately 20 in book 4 maturing all the way through the various books. While I've found the entire series captivating, interesting, and delightful to read, I finished this book in two days; it was so hard to put down even for sleep. Now, I punished myself for reading the book so quickly because I will have to wait longer (perception wise) for book 5.I highly recommend this entire series to anyone who loves books where persons develop over time yet for each book they are fully developed, where you love a little bit of mystery, where you love cliff hangers at the end, and you like to see both the good and bad in people fleshed out by an author who knows how to write extremely well.

Tavi or should I say Octavian knows how to make a grand entrance
Overall: Captain's Fury is a very good book with some good character development, ties up many plot lines and introduces an intriguing premise for the next book -- fight the Vord in the Canim's homeland. Tavi is revealed as the grandson of Gaius, Octavian. The petty politics of Alera are clearly played out showing the stupidity of humans in the face of a very powerful and maelovent force. Also, the power of the first lord, Gaius, is finally demonstrated with quite a spectatular effect.Characters: Tavi's development continues nicely including the development of his internal Furycrafting. He is not able to manifest an external Fury yet he clearly has some powerful and diverse Furycrafting befitting of an hier to the First Lord. The other characters are nicely updated to fillin the two year time gap from the last year. Also, the love interests are starting to resolve themselves with some satisfaction. The insane/psychopathic swordswoman / cutter is nicely done. Fidelius comes back to the side of the good but makes a nasty enemy in the process.Plot: The plot was clearly laid out in the last book. This book is just the execution of how to resolve the key plots set up in the last book. The plot lines seemed fairly clear without many twists; it makes for a quick read without any confusion by the reader. The Canim are developed nicely for this story as well as preparatory background for the next book.World development: There is some new development but most of it is in regard to the Canim. Also, the internal furycrafting of Tavi is an interesting twist on him developing his abilities into something truely amazing. By the next book, Tavi should be a serious force. The Canim are done well and consistently with elements of the last book. Tavi does a good job of showing the importance of understanding your enemies strength, weaknesses and social morays.Prose: The prose is Jim Butcher in action -- nothing more, nothing less. The style is consistent with the other books. His writing does get a bit predictable (note: I have read all of the Codex Alera and the Dresden File books, so I should be fairly familiar with the style).Action: The action is done well especially the sea combats and the description of the Leviathans. The combat elements of the legions vs. the Canim are crisp, well executed and not overly detailed.Overall: 4 starsCharacters: 4 starsPlot: 3.5 starsWorld development: 3.5 starsProse: 3.5 starsAction: 4 stars

Riveting
I gave this a 5 as it did all it was supposed to do.it gave intrigue, action, romance and a hero that we love. so what if some "saves" were beyond imagining. evidently not beyond the author's imagining imagination. and isn't that what it's all about, the imagination of the author? Jim Butcher has taken us on an exhilarating ride. i, for one, was very glad that I was on this ride.I will tell all of you who are looking for an epic series that you will remember and love for years, THIS is one. I have read this book and all in the series at least 2 times. yet, I still feel like the first time. I love the characters. I love their flurries and i'm in love with this world.this book and the whole of the 6 books in are worth the purchase, reading, and your time.my only wish after reading this series, is a continuation. it would be wonderful to get a glimpse of their lives......AFTER.

Great fantasy series
Just finished the sixth (and final) one of this series and really enjoyed them.Highly recommended as a fantasy seriesI finally got them on the basis of the being a fan of The Dresden Files, so I had high hopes, and I started reading as I had just got the sixth (and final) one ... I hate having to wait for a year between each book in a series, my memory is awful !I did struggle to get going in the first book, but I'm very glad I persisted.Ok, the books are not some deep cerebral world shattering tome, but you're not expecting that. What they are is good entertaining fantasy with a nice world, plenty of ideas, grand battles and good vs evil. The switch in each book from nothing through Academ, Cursor, Captain, Princeps and finally First Lord was a nice idea, along with the changes in the "enemy". It was interesting to see the threads of plot stretch across the series. Each book is a stand-alone story, but they form that "arc" that makes all the great series.I was cheering for the good guys all the way to the end ... Tavi, Kitai, Isana, Amara, Karg, Max, Marcus and many more.Go out and buy the set ... you'll enjoy them

most excellent
fourth book in the codex alera and it gets better, things have moved on since book 3 , tavi has grown into the command of the first aleran and this seems to put a few noses out of joint, his identity is at last revealed as gaius octavian and the action begins, he has the usual group of loyal followers with him and ....... no i won`t tell you how it goes just read the book, jim butchers easy style and attention to detail makes this most enjoyable, just like the others,it can almost be read on its own but its worth reading the first three just to soak up the world he has created, well recomended !!!!!!

but the story is so good and they are so well written that I've loved ...
I must admit these books wouldn't normally be to my taste, as there is alot of war and fighting, and alot of the books are taken up with strategy and war craft, but the story is so good and they are so well written that I've loved them. I would also recommend Jim Butchers other series of Harry Dresden books, they completely different but very very good.
