A landmark survey of one of architecture's most controversial yet popular style The Brutalist aesthetic is enjoying a renaissance - and this book documents Brutalism as never before. In the most wide-ranging investigation ever undertaken into one of architecture's most powerful movements, more than 850 Brutalist buildings - existing and demolished, classic and contemporary - are organized geographically into nine continental regions. Much-loved masterpieces in the UK and USA sit alongside lesser-known examples in Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond - 102 countries in all, proving that Brutalism was, and continues to be, a truly international architectural phenomenon. Includes twentieth-century masters such as Marcel Breuer, Lina Bo Bardi, Le Corbusier, Carlo Scarpa, Ernö Goldfinger, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, and Paul Rudolph. Contemporary architects featured include Alvaro Siza, Coop Himmelb(l)au, David Chipperfield, Herzog & de Meuron, Jean Nouvel, SANAA, OMA, Renzo Piano, Tadao Ando, and Zaha Hadid. Review: Solid book - Amazing book for people who appreciate brutalist architecture Review: Most thorough book of Brutalist architecture ever published - When this book came out it was slightly bigger and £100. This smaller edition is roughly A4 and therefore a more practical size. It uses the format of an atlas to show every 'brutalist' building of note by continent/subcontinent/ country, as well as providing key information about it's current state and use. The copy is for each building is holistic and informative. Photography is all in black and white, which personally I like- but others might not. Loved this book, absolute must have for anyone interested in Brutalism.

A really comprehensive publication
A real tome of Brutalist examples which also highlights the many geographical differences in architectural approaches.

A breeze block of a book.
Heavy. Important feeling. The book designers...(there must be book designers) have done a brilliant job of making the feel of a book correspond to its subject. The cover is a work of art in itself. It makes me smile every time I pick it up... I love it.

Oh well...
First things first. This book is brutalist. Giant, raw, and its weight makes it feels it's made out of concrete. The cover is rugged, just like concrete. Over its 500 plus pages we can see brutalist buildings around the world, and descriptions about their architects and their actual state. All of this is awesome, but there is a small but brutalist mistake. Every single photo is black and white. I understand Phaidon wanted to make it like it was concrete, but it is very boring and we can't have a real understating on how huge these buildings are. Don't get me wrong. I love black and white photos, but they most fulfill a purpose and not being a design gimmick. I was very divided between 3 or 4 stars. I ended up giving it 4 just because it's a huge reference for everyone that want to know a bit more about brutalism, with over 850 examples. From a photographic point of view it deserves 3 stars.

Fantastic book chronicling some of the best Brutalist architecture world-wide
I bought this with money for Christmas, despite it being earmarked for a holiday - but at this price, I just couldn't not buy it. The book itself is a monster, 560 pages, detailing Brutalist architecture, both new and old, around the world - the book is divided into areas, (e.g North America) and gives information into the sites, a little about the history, and the current status; in-use, demolished etc. The binding is extremely tactile, in a number of finishes, and generally smacks of high-quality. I've not had the chance to go completely through this, as it was only received yesterday, but the hour I spent flicking through it, (especially looking for my favourites) was time well spent, and I imagine the rest of the book will be equally pleasurable. Makes a great coffee table book

Quantity over depth
Buy this one, don't get me wrong. Book is on the heavy side, good paper and layout. A nice collection that I love browsing. Would only get better if they released several volumes as I have to find each place on Google to see more of it. There is only one picture per building.
