Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual: Roleplaying Game Core Rules, 4th Edition

I bought a boat load of dungeons and dragons rule books all at the same time. My motivation was not to test play each and every addition. I needed them as a research resource for a campaign world that my team is developing. I can tell you after having read every book from every addition there are not huge differences in 3 and 3.5 five unless you are purest. Most of the artwork is recycled. Version four is where the big differences come into play. All that being said let me state that having been a player for more than thirty five years the quality of the books has remained consistent. I am not a fan of breaking up books into multiple volumes to make more money so buy carefully. If you are a real D&D fan and you are considering a purchase, go for it.

Bought this to add to my DM book collection as it had a few features that the newer 5e books don't have. Even though i've not played 4th Edition or plan on playing it, this is very useful for playing with 5th Edition games. Each monster in this book comes with a tactics section that shows how a creature would react in a given situation, a feature I believe should still be around in the newer books. I will be using an updated 5e version of these tactics in future to improve my game running. As for the quality of the book itself, a very well designed manual. Easily readable and searchable with high quality art for most of the creatures within it. Though it is slightly out dated, for the price, you can't go wrong for a great addition to your D&D collection.

While there are a few monsters that I feel don't belong in the first of the 4th edition Monster Manuals, and there are a few monsters that I feel should have been there that didn't make it, this is still the best Monster Manual yet. The art is fantastic (well, most of it) and the seem to have made sure their is art for every entry this time. The layout is better with entries starting at the top of the left page instead of just "wherever" like the previous books. The new stat blocks are much simpler and straight forward, easier to read and to build encounters with. Great book!

I have been playing RPGs for a few years now and I have seen many types of monster manuals. I'm not going to go into much details, but here are the points I liked, and the stuff I thought they could do better. Pros: It has a little bit of everything you might want. Easy to read Laid out clear monster blocks Cons: Being the first publication of the monster manual, I thought more common creatures players will run into at lower levels (below 20th) would had been nice. For example, one of the creatures they have in the monster manual was different types of Abominations which are level 20+ monsters from the War of the Primordials. Cool, but not necessarily needed in the first Monster Manual. What would had been nice was an expanded Human, Elf, Eladrin, Dragonborn, Goblinoid, ect sections with more diversity of opponent options up to 20th level. These creatures might not have the flair that the Abominations have, but your more likely to use them in a gaming session with level 1 and 2 players. Although, if you get Monster Manual 2, they flush out the more common monsters including expanding the opponent options for Humans, Elves, ect. So as a DM, you will need both. So in the end, good content, but a different layout would had been nice.

This book is really well put together. You get a huge array of creatures (which are easy to locate alphabetically or by level) that play different roles in battles, from 1-hit minions to solo skirmishers to artillery, etc. Putting encounters together is really easy, you just look for proper xp and roles, plug them in, and you're ready to go. A final note, as silly as it sounds, the illustrations are actually really inspiring and you can show the pictures to your gaming party and watch them mentally prepare for the pending struggle.

I played 1st edition in high school. I have been out for years and looking to get back into D&D. I did research and decided to go with this system(4th edition). The game is what you make it. 4th edition is a different system. The books are 1/3 the cost of new 5th edition and of Pathfinder. People are dumping this for the new or returning to 3.5. This creates an opportunity to play and not break the bank for me. I am happy to get it!!

Just what we needed to expand our play

I just started a Dungeons and Dragon club at my library and this has been the perfect guide for me to help teens understand how monsters work in this role-playing game. I can't compare it to other editions, since I'm new at this myself, but our dungeonmaster likes the more vivid nature of the pictures and how the information is displayed. Based off of feedback, I would recommend this to D&D players interested in acquiring the latest version of this game.

Got my book, it was used, was concerned and BAM. The book is in fantastic condition and looks brand new, outside of some pressure marks, which is to be expected.
