Sakuran

Sakuran is a must read (especially if you’re a sex worker)
Speaking as someone who was once a sex-worker, and as someone who has been a fan of Anno-sensei’s work for decades, I found “Sakuran” to be a beautiful, tragic and far more realistic depiction of life for oiran than the ones written by men that disgustingly romanticize the real suffering of these women sold into sexual slavery. As a fan of josei manga with, I can’t recommend this enough. I would have hated how this ended twenty years ago, but I can truly appreciate the realistic end, and Kiyoha’s strength and endurance in the face of depravity disguised as beauty.

One for fans of old Edo
Phenomenal. A truly great insight into the long past history of Japan's premier pleasure quarter in the era of Shoguns and Samurai. The story follows to the film of the same name (also highly recommended) and shows the story of a strong willed courtesan from her early days as a child sold into slavery as a maid, to her glittering heights as the Yoshiwara's premier courtesan.Adult themes, violence, nudity and graphic sex inside.
