American Alien
A new animated movie from DC comics. This is a completely fresh take on the Superman origin story. It thus has no tie ins to anything else, and you don't need to have seen any other dvds to get into it. It is a twelve certificate, thanks to some strong language and some graphic horror. But both of these things are just to two particular characters. This is a very loose adaptation of a comic called 'Superman: American Alien.' We begin with the young Clark in Smallville. Who can't quite get over his fear of how humans might treat someone like him if they knew the truth of his origin. Then we flash forward to his move to Metropolis. Joining the Daily Planet. First meetings with Lois and Lex. He's still figuring out how to balance his life as Clark with what he can do. But when a certain alien bounty hunter comes to Metropolis, he's forced into action. And things escalate from there. He's got to figure things out. And fast. This adopts a slightly different look in the animation to other dc movies. The figures are very slightly stylised, and the colours are a gentle but bright palate. I wasn't sure about this look in trailers and previews. But it actually had me from the off when watching this. It is really rather good, and it really works well. As do the lead voice cast. Darren Cris makes a good Superman, because he sounds as young and inexperienced as this take on the character is. Alexandra Daddario is a good Lois. As strong and assertive as she should be. Zarchary Quinto's voice really fits Lex, with a good understated tone. The first half of this is really good. It tackles the theme of alienation, and finding your place in a new world really well. The second half has a lot to do plot wise and wrapping things up, and as it switches to the focus on that, it doesn't become quite as compelling as the first half was. Nevertheless, it does manage to pull things together pretty well at the end. This is nothing new. Long term fans will have seen many takes on this story, and this is just one more. But it does manage to do some new and different things, so it's not bad. Not a five star release, but worth a watch. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, French, German. Subtitles: English, Arabic, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Norwegian, Swedish. The disc goes into the main menu when loaded, without any ads or trailers. Extras are the usual sneak peeks at other dc animations, using a mix of animation and talking heads to do that. As ever we have two for existing ones. Justice League V the Fatal Five, and Superman/Batman Public Enemies. Usually the third is of the next release, which is Batman: Death in the family. But this one is for Batman: Soul of the Dragon. Which isn't out tiil February. This sneak peek is brilliant though. Somewhat stylised, but it does great work for it's subject, and I can't wait to watch the full movie as a result.

No music, bad writing and stupid story.
Spoiler warning: Firstly, there is a severe lack of music - practically none. It makes the film feel very cold and difficult to get into. Secondly, they kill a major character only to bring them back the next scene; with no explanation whatsoever. Its stupid and ruins the plot further. Lobo turns up and says things he should not know, for a reason he shouldn’t have. And has a weapon that shouldn’t exist. Then they ruin him further by throwing out his motivation for being there and making him a lackey; and he just accepts it?! Parasite’s origin also makes no sense, nor does his size increase. Martian Manhunter can read the mind of a baby (sort-off) and understand a complete alien language. Its just stupid, stupid, stupid! While the animation is great, its the plot issues that ruin it and so this sadly a poor version of Superman.

Pleasantly surprised
Was very wary of buying this as the cover looks like something for kids. Don't get me wrong this isn't dickens but it has genuine depth. Check it out

An excellent revamp to the DC Animated Universe
Tim Sheridan understands the character of Superman. This is clear, the movies iteration of the character (although young and only take his first steps int he red boots) acts more like the traditional Superman we know, than the New 52 version ever did. The film is fun, well paced and beautifully animated not to mean very well acted. I’m still not sold on Zachary Quinto as Luthor but he wasn’t “bad”, the voice just didn’t suit the character in my opinion. A worth purchase for any Supes fan!

Ya que muchas películas de animación no se llegan a estrenar o emitir en España, no queda más remedio que comprarlas para poder visionarlas una y otra vez, muy recomendable.
