Girl With A Pearl Earring

Powerful actors in an understated film
This was an excellent small film which was based on a painting by Vermeer, The Girl with the Pearl Earring which in turn became a novel by Tracy Chevalier. It was a very accurate portrayal of seventeenth century Holland reduced to one household, deliberately kept claustrophobic in a true portrayal of the age and place. Colin Firth and Scarlett Johansson work very well together. The dialog must have come down to very few pages, even as the emotional energy between them rises with each scene. This is movie for a sophisticated audience that actually wants to learn something of an age, a social milieu, a genius of a painter, and two actors who truly emote. I recommend it most highly.

A pearl of a movie
A very profound movie intertwining the life of a painter at the mercy of a rich patron and the life of a servant girl amidst family dynamics.I had bought the DVD because the trailer had scenes and costumes from medieval Delft, and I only wanted to see more such scenes to get a sense of life in the Netherlands in the 1600s. So, I did not buy the DVD for the plot, but I was happily surprised by the rich story, and I watched the movie three times. I like it so much I couldn’t stop!

Blu-ray or DVD
I didn’t know that it is an Asian release. The movie plays nice, albeit the transfer of the film stock and encoding is so-so for a Blu-tay format. The DVD would be enough. It’s a good movie. Scarlett shines, Colin is weak.

Beautiful Tale
My friend and I watched this movie during a date night. Popcorn, snuggles, and wine. What a beautiful story! Also staring two of my favorite actors! You can't go wrong if you see this movie!

Not what I was expecting.
It has Chinese captions at the bottom that cant be taken off. It makes it very annoying to watch.

The movie is good and worth watching. However, I suspect this is a pirated copy from China.

A nice period piece
I bought this in DVD format to watch with my wife because Hollywood currently is producing such awful stuff for theater releases, while the streaming world offers a small set of gems but otherwise equally awful stuff at the cost of a much more expensive investment. A DVD is a much smaller investment that leaves open chances to easily revisit the material again in the future. I was pleasantly surprised that the production aimed to do its best to try to depict--admittedly within a complete fictionalization based upon the novel with the same title--the essential history of Vermeer's best-recognized work. The film does a wonderful job of capturing the essential background conditions faced by the artist, his family and servants (including, in the story, one who poses for the painting), and other people of his locale and time. This is an interesting film well worth viewing.
